To prevent a program from starting up, you can go to

Start-->Run

Type "msconfig" and press enter. Click the "startup" tab. You now have a list of programs which will automatically run on startup. Find the EXE name of the program you want to prevent from running and uncheck it on the list. Click on "OK" and restart your computer.

In response to maylaura, actually, he's not...the first two answers are correct. Using msconfig does not insure that the program will not recreate the registry entry on the next system reboot. Also, in response to using msconfig to disable processes, this is not accurate. To ACCURATELY disable services, go to Start - Run - type "services.msc" without the quotes. Disable services here by right clicking, going to "Properties", clicking Stop if it's running, then selecting disable from the drop-down menu. You can also access this utility through the control panel. This is not recommended unless you understand what each service does and which programs use them. Disabling some will screw up the functionality of some of your software.

I should mention that I'm not trying to step on any toes or cause arguments, but if I see something that's incorrect, I will correct it. I would expect the same done for me. I may seem rather standoffish at the moment, but that's just because my wife just pissed me off a couple minutes ago. Sorry.

Simple solution www.startupmechanic.com This is freeware that you download and install. It scans your machine and then as you click on loaded programs with mysterious names, it even tells you what they are and what they do. It categorizes the startups by necessary, useful, useless, and harmful. You turn off what ever you want and can renable them later if needed. It also runs in background and whenever a programs tries to register itself to run at startup, the tool asks for your permission. If you say no, it is not allowed and cant keep recreating itself.

Excellent tool!!

There are several things you can do, here are two:

1. Click "Start", "Run", "MSCONFIG"...de-select your desired programs from there just be careful not to click the wrong things.

2. Use Startup Cop, it works great managing all of your programs and is really easy to use.

Good luck! :)

You go into the programs' settings and look around and there's usually a box that's checked that says "run on start up" uncheck it.

Another thing to do is from the run window, run MSCONFIG, it will let you decide what processes load up at start up.

However, you should be fairly knowledgeable about those processes, before you hand pick which ones you want to disable.

go to that program's options, there is an option where you can make it not start up each time you turn on the computer.

you can get to services in msconfig, and uncheck what you don't want to start, but the best way in XP is to go into administration-services-and change the ones you don't want to start to disabled instead of automatic
