Does the BIOS see the CD drive? If it doesn't, then the CD is dead. Or disconnected. Or possibly has had it's jumpers played with so it's no longer set right.

You get into the BIOS on Compaq computers by pressing F10 when there is a (red?white?) square in the top right of the screen... early on in the boot up sequence.

Or you can force it to go into the BIOS by changing the amount of memory in the computer. Don't make it zero memory or the computer won't boot up.

the compaq deskpro are very reliable p.c,s and very easy to fix

go into set up(press delete at boot) and press "load fail safe defaults",then press "save and exit set up",this will load the best working settings in bios for easy configuring your p.c

also in bios set your cd rom as the first bootable device so you can load windows without any problems

go to http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Home.jsp?&lang=en&cc=uk&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=96266&submit.y=7&submit.x=8&lang=en&cc=uk,for more specific information on your deskpro

you can also download some very good diagnostic software, which can find the problems you are experiencing at the moment

your best bet though is to simply reinstall windows and start from scratch, especially if its just been given to you,i mean you dont want your mates data and a clean install will free up more space aswell

any problems let me know

good luck mate !

It's not recognizing the cd drive because there are no drivers to load the .dll files..

I can help you with this.

You need to first purchase an operating system, I recommend pcclub.com.. their prices are amazing.
