Sound like your power supply is on the fritz. Get a new one. They're pretty easy to replace.

Sounds like you have hardware problems. First, since you have to keep resetting the time, that's an indication that the battery needs to be replaced. It's like a little watch battery on the motherboard, very easy to change. Second, your power supply might be going bad. Try swapping out the old one and put in a new one. This is also very easy to do. If none of these work, it could be a virus that's shutting down your PC. Do a virus scan and see what comes up.

If you are having trouble with your pc retaining its clock you have a failing battery on the mainboard.

I would replace that first since its the cheapest (like a watch battery)

For the shutting down problem it could be related to a failing fan in the system causing it to overheat and automatically shut itself off. Look inside and make sure all fans are spinning.

If one isnt simply replace it as this is the next cheapest thing to replace in your pc.

I would say it is most likely a P.S. problem. My PC wouldn't turn on period, but i did a lot of research to find out what was wrong with mine. Sounds like it might be tripping something. Could even be a messed up fuse inside the Power supply. Or it could be the standby thing, but i would think it would let you know something before turning off. Hope this helps.

Ok, I know very little about computers, but I had a similar situation just today. I took it into the Geek Squad at Best buy and it turned out to be a loose wire inside of the computer. So, not amount of me tinkering with the software would prevent that. If all else fails, take it in.

It might be harddware or a program you installed recently. Go to control panel and uninstall a program. Sort the list by date, and check to see what you recently downloaded. Mine used to do the same thing, so I researched some of the programs/hardware that I didn't recongnize and it told me one of them was faulty. If it doesn't allow you to uninstall the program reboot your computer and start it in safe mode with networking and that may be work better. Something to think about would be turning off automatic updates, those are a real pain! Hope I helped:)

Look in control panel, under start menu.

In control panel, find Power Options.

In there, shut off the Power Down modes.

This might be a temporary fix to some other

root cause.

Don't turn it back on till it gets fixed, sounds like a hardware problem and you might make it worse. Check the CPU's (processor's) fan, it might be running slow or has stopped running entirely. Brushing off the dust might be a solution, if not change the fan. Check your memory cards too, remove them, clean the slots and the card, then place them back in.

If all else fails, consult a qualified technician.

Your system most likely is overheating. When computers are too hot, by self-monitoring environmental features set in the BIOS, they will automatically turn off. You should open the case up and see if all the fans are running. If not, replace accordingly. In addition, vacuum the system out.

>clock problem....change bios battery on motherbrd

>rebooting problem.....what motherboard is it, does it have onboard lan?....if so disable it, then start ur computer.....check cpu temp in bios....

>to c if ur pwr supply is faulty jst disconnect FDD, CDROM from pwr supply. If it still boots then ur power supply is ok

>one more possibility is that ur motherbords back side is touching the cabinet somewhr resulting in a short circuit. so it might reboot

>problem still persists then boot in safe mode...if it doesn't restart in safemode then u need to reload windows XP....

>if problem still persists then trty replacing ur ram module
