I upgraded to AVG free 8.5 (from previous version) 2 days ago. A few hours later the computer started hanging, then made ominous squeaks and I got serious error messages. I managed to back up my data then on rebooting I repeatedly got "Operating system not found". Some kind person on YA suggested I unplug and leave the comp overnight, then try rebooting. It did boot this morning, so I removed AVG (and the Ethernet plug) but at next start up I noticed that the message "Serial Presence detect (SPD) device data missing or inconclusive....100MHz memory assumed". (I don't think that was there before but I'm not certain.) The HD is 7 years old and it runs WIn2K which I need to run some professional software that would cost thousands to upgrade for XP/Vista.

It's running OK at the moment but would you think the comp is on its last legs - or could this be all down to AVG? Any thoughts would be welcome.

I too had problems with upgrading to avg 8 particularly after updating. So, download ccleaner if you dont have it, cleans uwanted temp files and folders and folders left after uninstall. Make sure you have removed avg completely. Then go to the link below, download direct from avg link at bottom of page. Update and use as usual, does slow down pc a bit, but then it has anti-virus and anti-spyware which should keep your pc safe. One other thing, have you checked for spyware etc, use lavasoft adaware, spyware remover, run full scan, remove anything it finds.

Hope this helps

I agree with everything you said, valid points. I think what ESPN means is, Kobe and MJ want to are very competitive, more so than most NBA players (which I do think is true). When Dirk didn't make the playoffs this year, it seemed as if he just kind of shrugged it off, and used the "there is always next year" mentality. Kobe fought and scratched and clawed until his team was in a position to be in the playoffs. Switching his score first mentality to pass and rebound mentality ( look at the numbers and you will see he has passed more this year than any other year). Kobe would have NEVER been okay with not making the playoffs, but it seemed as if dirk didn't care this year. And I'm an enormous Maverick and Dirk fan, have been my whole life. I'm assuming your over the age of 15 due to your knowledge of the game, so you probably saw Jordan play. His will was simply more than any other player in the NBA, maybe in sports period. He also played with the flu, and through many injuries. Although it is annoying I do think Kobe and MJ's will to win and competitiveness is more than most. Maybe not everyone, but most.

Anti-virus's are a scam, plain and simple. They are a false sense of security and are far more trouble than they are worth. The virus your PC might get today won't even be detected by an anti-virus for weeks or months. Format your hard drive, that should fix this problem with ease.

Uninstall it and down load and install the free version of Avast as it is much better. Put another hard drive in it and install a hard drive mirror image programme to transfer all the data to the new drive.
