What are computer operating systems?
2010-05-22 12:19:11 UTC
I am filling out an employment application for a private investigator and one of the questions is:

1st question: What computer operating systems are you familiar with?
(What would these systems be?)

2nd question: What word processing programs are you familiar with?
(is that microsoft word and stuff?)

I just don't know what systems they are referring to. I use a basic home computer with Windows Vista. What would I be used to working with?

An operating system is responsible for controlling hardware, providing a user interface, and providing a platform for other software to be installed on, it has a kernel(controls hardware) and a shell(user interface and manages software) Windows vista would be a perfect example of an operating system!

windows

mac osx

os/2

unix

every flavor of linux

every flavor of bsd

solaris

amiga

The list can go on.

An operating system is the software on a computer that manages the way different programs use its hardware, and regulates the ways that a user controls the computer. Your "computer operating system" is Windows Vista. Therefore you (hopefully) are familiar with using the Microsoft Windows Operating system. There are many more operating systems such as Mac OS, Linux etc.

An example of a word processing program is Microsoft Office Word.

Windows is an operating system. So if you use Vista you are familiar with the Windows OS.

Apple has its own OS. There are also many Linux systems. If you are unfamiliar with those, just put down Windows.

The word processing programs are Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, Open Office Word. Put down whichever you know best.

The operating system is the software that all other software runs on. You would have Vista, for example.

Word is an example of a word processing program.

windows vista is your operating system

this acts like a bridge between the hardware and the software.

and yes microsoft word is a word processing program

they only use the word word processing because the are loads out there. such as open office containing open office word and notepad could technically be considered a word processor but no one would use it, also iworks for mac
