In theory, if I bought Vista premium, and had a computer with a 64-bit Cpu will it see that and install a 64-bit version of Vista or are there two different versions Ex. Premium 64-bit and Premium 32-bit?

yes there are two different versions of windows vista - 32bit and 64bit. People get pretty frustrated when buying higher end machines because it comes with 32bit and 32bit does not recognize more than 3GB of memory. 64bit on the other hand recognizes much more. So even though you have a 64bit cpu, the 32bit vista will limit your cpu's potential.

Yes, you should definitely upgrade to Vista x64. No only will you get to use all 4 GB of that RAM but you will achieve performance gains in almost every application you use. All my 32-bit apps run like a charm in Vista x64. Games like Crysis, Far Cry 2, and Bioshock all run faster for me in Vista x64 as opposed to 32-bit XP Pro/Vista. Vista x64 is also stable as a rock now that devs have had the time to tweak their drivers. There's just no reason now not to upgrade to Vista x64. It's only going to get faster as more native 64-bit software is developed, not too mention you'll be able to install and use as much RAM as you fancy. If you still run 16-bit apps and use a lot of legacy hardware then you may want to keep stay with a 32-bit OS for the time being. Otherwise I'm sure you'll be very happy with Vista x64.

Now a days almost all the processors come with 64bit capacity. You can choose a 32 bit OS for now which is cheaper and a lot of people use it, and later on do a clean install of a 64bit OS if you wish.
You can upgrade to windows 7 anytime you wish coz, if you are buying a Laptop with only 32 bit capacity then in that case, you either that a hoareded, very very old stock or you are really dumb.

No, there are 2 versions. You would have to buy the 64-bit version of Windows Vista.

There are 2 different versions of windows. 64 and 32 bit. They come packaged seperatly. Before settling for Vista though I would pick up a from RC of windows 7 for free. You can upradge to a official version once it is released. Check out the link below.
