You don't need to defragment. That is not a Mac thing. It is only for Windows.

You don't have a "Mac OS". You have a computer. It is some model name such as iMac, iBook, MacBook, etc. If you get into the habit of mentioning the type of computer, it can often help us to give the best advice.

You need to repair the directory structure of the hard drive. To do that, you need to boot to the OS X install DVD. Put it in. Restart and hold the C key until you see the Apple logo on screen. Wait for it to load. Go past the language selection. Go to the Utilities menu at the top and open Disk Utility. Click on the hard drive icon at the left. Select the "First Aid" tab. Click the "Repair Disk" button. If it finds problems, repair again. If it continues to find problems, your only solution is to backup valuable files and erase the drive.

If you don't have an OS X install DVD, you have to get one. Don't think of it as an extra expense. You wouldn't think a spare tire is an extra expense for owning a car, or cat food is an extra expense for owning a cat. It is an essential. Besides, the DVD came with the computer... or it should have. Apple put this DVD in the box. Why you don't have it is a separate issue.

Go into Applications and select "Disc utility" then select your HD and clic "repair authorisations"

That might help.... if not it could be a hardware problem.... Failing HD or RAM

Happened with mine it was RAM...replaced one RAM stick be working fine ever since

Could your laptop be over heating. Try feeling around the case to see if there is a hot spot.

Why not backup you laptop and re-install the OS, it could be the OS is corrupt in places. Also defragging your drive isn't really going to solve the problem as the linux kernal of OSX looks after the disks pretty well, but there are notes on the apple website should you need to defrag yur disks.

Defrag does not repair files it just moves them around so they are no-longer fragmented across the surface of the disc

Your only bet is checking for updates and downloading them. A defrag will not help with freezing. A defrag will help a hang but not a freeze. If there are no updates available take it to the mac store, buy a new computer, or reformat the computer with the osx disk. Make sure you have everything backed up on discs, usbs, or external hds.

Try running an OS restore... Something ay have gotten corrupted within the file system thats causing it to freeze... It may also be something to do with your RAM. It's kinda hard to tell without more info.

Take it to the "Genius Bar" at a Mac store. They've locked up their products so much that they are the only ones who can fix them.

In the mean time, I'd suggest backing up all your important files to Cd, Dvd, or an external hard drive. In case your computer doesn't wake up from one of it's crashes.
