Question:
Repeating Windows 7 startup repair failure.?

I built my own computer a few months back, but this is the second time this specific error has happened. On startup, Windows asks to do system restore from some unknown problem. Well the startup repair runs for somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes and says it failed. It says the root cause is this:
"Repair action: System Restore
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x1f
Time taken = 218636 ms

Repair action: System files integrity check and repair
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x490
Time taken = 690054 ms"

It shuts down my computer after I hit OK and seems to start up okay next time I power on. This specific scenario has happened twice so far, but wants to do a system restore at least once a week.
So I really have 2 problems. #1 is the failed restore and #2 is the unusually frequent need to system restore.
Help please, and thanks in advance.

Are you getting a BSOD? You can try these cmd methods to repair the start up. Boot you PC from you Windows 7 disk and pick the command prompt option. Then try these one at a time.

after selecting repair>cmd prompt, enter:

BootRec.exe /fixmbr

you can also substitue the /fixmbr with thes commands:

/FixBoot. Writes a boot sector onto the system partition to start Windows

/ScanOs. Scans all disks for Windows installations and displays them to you.

/RebuildBcd. Scans all disks for Windows installations and prompts you to pick the ones you want to add to the BCD.

I am a professional developer with Microsoft, and have about 10 years of experience in the field of Computer Engineering. Most problems with PC's are the result of malicious software that infected a Computer. Examples of this are things such as malware, viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, root kits, and worms. In other cases, they are the result of stability issues due to crashes, freezes, or Hardware Issues. Some examples of hardware issues could be a dirty cooling fan causing the computer to overheat, or low memory due to lack of RAM, which could cause the PC to run slowly. You may think it could be a virus, or malware, or registry issues, but it could be something else entirely. As a computer layman, one may find it hard to really ascertain what exactly is causing the problems, without having a professional do an in depth analysis of your PC.

As professional computer repairs can be quite costly, I would recommend to you a Software that many of us in the tech department here at Microsoft use personally and professionally to diagnose and repair computer problems very quickly. It is a software called Reimage, from https://reimagefix.im .. In my personal experience, and in the experience of many of my associates, this is probably the best software ever created for those experiencing computer troubles. This is likely to remedy just about ANY problem your computer could possibly be having, and have it running like new. Reimage has won several awards, and been featured in publications such as PC Mag.

(A). Try performing hardware clean boot and check.

Here’s the procedure to do it:

1. Go to start and type device manager in the start search field.

2. Type device manager and select device manager from the programs list.

3. Right Click on Sound Card, Video Adapter, and Network Adapter one by one and click disable.

4. Reboot the computer.

If this fixes your problem, enable to hardware devices one at time to find the exact device causing this problem.

After you found the device that causing the problem you can resolve by installing last driver or replacing the device.

(B). Perform normal clean boot and check.

To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts. Clean boot will stop any interference with other third party software on the computer.

Steps to perform clean boot:

1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.

3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.

4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.

5. Click OK.

6. When you are prompted, click Restart.

7. After the computer starts, check whether the problem is resolved.

If the issue is resolved check which third party is causing the problem, referring the link given below:

Reset the computer to start as usual

After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.

When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

Hope it helps

This sounds suspiciously like a drive failure.

You probably did not use the right parts for the computer. Some parts maybe to powerful or to weak. Please give a brief description of your computer. But my answer would be.....GET A MAC. :D
