I have ubuntu 10.10 installed on the hard drive of my computer. I just got windows 7, but i cant install it on it because its formatted to ubuntu and i guess they format differently. So how do i wipe the hard drive. I don't care if i loose all my files. I have win7 installed on a different hard drive and put it in the computer and boot off that one. I can see the ubuntu drive but just dont know how to delete everything off of it. The hd with win 7 in the computer is just temporary untill i can get it installed on the other hard drive.

Thanks

I also have Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop, and I'm working on it as well. Here's what I did:

Insert the Ubuntu 10.10 DVD you made to install Ubuntu, and just run it like you're trying it.

Once it loads, click "System", then "Disk Utility". Select your hard drive you want to format, then click "Format Drive", make sure the next window says "Master Boot Record", then click "Format". If you get any errors that the disc is in use, go back to the Disk Utility window and Unmount the Volume, then try again. If you have any problems, drop me an email. You can find my email address in my profile.

Good luck!

Boot from the Win7 DVD and select "Custom" install so you can remove the partitions and format.

You should be able to reformat in Windows.

Otherwise, you can try to format to VFAT in Ubuntu using the rescue/install disc.

Maybe

# fdisk ./dev/sda

- delete partitions, make a single new one for all space, set type to FAT32

# mkfs -t vfat /dev/sda1

u need the windows cd.

turn off the pc, hit F8 or see if it tells u which to hit for system start up

then start up from the cd and thats it.

the cd will see the drive and format it to fat 32 or ntfs
