If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Pop in the Windows disk and boot off it. It'll give you an option to either install or repair Windows. Choose the repair option, which will get you to a black command prompt screen. Type "chkdsk /r c:" (without the quotes) and wait for it to run. After that, type "fixboot" and then "fixmbr". You should then be able to boot into Windows, but I would keep an eye on your hard drive as it might be going bad.

This is a standard error caused when Windows tries to write the data to the drive so that it uses your saved settings at the next boot, but the user switches off the PC. It is almost unavoidable as the only way to get the PC to respond is to switch it off, so it is not all your fault ;-)

You will be glad to know the fix is easy as long as you have the right windows CD to match your OS version of the original install.

1.Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

2.Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.

3.When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

4.If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.

5.When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

6.At the command prompt, type chkdsk /r , and then press ENTER.

7.Wait until its finished and you get a list of the total bytes size of the drive.

8.At the command prompt, type exit , and then press ENTER to restart your computer.

I would suggest as soon as the PC boots you run a full system scan for Viruses, spy-ware and root-kits as this may be the reason for the multiple pop ups!
