Question:
what is the HIGH END specs/configuration of best LINUX workstation/desktop?
2012-10-07 06:36:18 UTC
i mean hardware configuration?
i want to a assemble a LINUX workstation with 5 hard disks like Macpro(it has 4 hard disks, since its too expensive for the configurations available)

Plz give a "HIGH END" configuration of the workstation/desktop(inc.
3 monitors "NOT DUAL" but 3 monitors, their size and brand,
HDD brand,
SSD brand,processor,graphics card
and even the buses or any cables and CPU cabinet, wireless mouse etc)

i want to install fedora, debian, backtrack in separate disks.
Debian in seagate momentus hybrid 750GB
Fedora and Backtrack in separate two-2TB HDDs
Keep 2 other 512GB SSD for backup/archiving.

You might think its overkill but i like it this way and please don't suggest any ibm server or any ready-made stuff or to buy 3 separate computers,i want to assemble to get the moneys worth and i want all 3 os in one computer.
my BUDGET is $50,000.

Also,it might be stupid but since i wil hav 3 monitors with 3 separate disks for os can i run 3 O.S simultaneously??

And no you can't run three at once unless two or more are running in a VM. (which really shouldn't be a problem with that much RAM so long as you don't need a lot of graphic capability in the virtual machines.

And you don't need seperate disks, the GPT partition supports more partitions on one disk than you can practically use. You could fit all three OS's On one of the 512GB SSD, and all of the data on a 6-7 disk RAID 5 array.

But really going beyond that is a desktop is going to cost a lot of money for marginal improvements..

And make sure to install BIONC on that beast, that way at least someone is using the capabilities of the system fully.

If you are watching at $5000 machines, you are atmosphere your attractions too high. I mean you're looking at a fee in your machines running over $200000 on my own, that's not even on account that any network infrastructure or hire on a building or whatever else. There are a few things that i'd recollect, one do you ought to keep Dell? Are you able to go along with one other manufacturer? What are your specs for the machines? The opposite thing to do is to perhaps don't forget some of the custom manufacturers, as they can give higher offers if you are going to be shopping 40 machines. Dell is so tremendous that 40 machines to them is nothing, nonetheless, to a bit bit smaller organization it probably a colossal sale. With a proposal closer to what desires the games have, and what else you have to have on the machines, and whether or no longer you wish to have to have a server or now not. I've furnished you with some hyperlinks to different brand's web pages to keep in mind your buy from, as I said earlier than, it is usually a greater deal going with a smaller organization, as it will be a greater sale for them, and may present more flexibility on price. There are other matters to keep in mind too, if you happen to buy you've gotten the machines, the one factor you would must fear about at some point would be upgrading the computing device, new cpu, mb, ram, video card some thing, and you're carried out. With a lease when the rent expires you flip the machines in and get distinct ones, less complicated of course, do not must worry about buying however this is the article, by the point the leases are up, the science in the machines are going to be historic anyway.

Dear friend , your question is fairly complicated. For the hardware config i will recommend a Xeon, since you are building a server, but for all other questions, i suggest you go to www.ubuntuforums.org

The people there are real experts and will help you. If i were you, i wouldn't trust people on yahoo answers for this.

Also on yahoo answers, one person cant post more than 1 answers and therefore it is not possible to have a conversation with the answerer s. On the forum, there is no such restriction. Best of Luck.

Sorry for my mistake. Since you are not building a server, you would be better off with a i7-2700K- its runs at 3.50 GHz(turbo boost upto 3.90 Ghz) stock, it has been successfully overclocked to as high as 4.8 GHz; even if you don't clock it that high around 4.4 will also give you a excellent performance.

Hard Disks- Seagate manufactures excellent HDDs, get a 1 TB, should be enough. If you want, you can get a SSD and keep your primary OS on it-this will drastically improve loading performance.

RAM- 8 GB would be enough, make sure you get a DDR3 one.

Video Card- This will be the most tricky part of all. Since both AMD and nvidia do not provide drivers for linux, and you will need a good video card if plan to do video editing, designing etc, make sure you do proper research for a card that fits your needs as well as is 100% compatible with Linux.(Although i have used intel onboard graphics, but you're gonna need a better one). Again- I recommend ubuntuforums.org. They have the best experts and will offer good advice.
