Question:
Hard drive interfaces?
2007-02-20 01:20:17 UTC
I have a Compaq Presario SR1520AN Desktop PC, and i want to buy a new internal hard drive. I have noticed there are many different sorts of hard drive interfaces (ATA SATA IDE) anyhow i want to buy this hdd http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Samsung-250GB-HDD-EXTERNAL-HARD-DISK-DRIVE-USB-2-0-1-N_W0QQitemZ290084594153QQihZ019QQcategoryZ64463QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
which has an a ATA-6 interface (for full specs check link). As you can see it comes with an external enclosure, but i also want to be able to use it inside my computer as an internal hdd to instal Ubuntu on. Can i use this ATA-6 hdd in my current machine?

You sure can Davo.

You'll need to remove the drive from the enclosure,,which is very simple and straightforward.

There is a Jumper on the Drive,,,it should be set to CS/Cable Select.

The Drive should have a label which depicts the jumper settings.

If Not,,Samsung's website has simple instructions I'm sure.

You'll also need a ATA Cable,,,ATA 100/133.

There's OLD ata 33 cables ,but I doubt you'd happen upon one of those these days.

That cable is $5 USD or so,,,,

You'll also need 4 little screws to mount the drive,,and that's

all the additional parts you'll need.

The cables have a "Motherboard end" and a drive end.

Most All have dual Drive Connectors.

To Identify Motherboard end,,Cable will be either:

*Labelled

*Blue or Colored Connector

* Or have One connector a far distance from the 2 Drive Connectors

(board)-------(HDD)-(HDD)

Looking Into your PC,,,the ATA/EIDE Connectors are on Far Right Hand side.

Use the #1Connector,,it's the extreme R/H one

They're pictured here directly above "BIOS" chip

If Your CD/DVD Drive happens to be plugged into #1 IDE Connector,,that's fine.

Just use # 2 Connector,,,,there's No Problem whatsoever with that.

Lastly,,You'll need to Mount the Drive

Now that I've typed this all,,,

I see that Compaq has "HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Installing or Replacing a Hard Drive"

with Videos and everything,,,lol

If You Do have space in the "Drive Cage" to mount it,,,and have a choice of positions,,,it's best to mount the Drives Away from each other---like Skip a Space.

It's NOT necessary,,,only a suggestion in the interest of optimizing Airflow around all the drives.

You couldn't have chosen a Better Drive.

All Samsungs are excellent quality,,all their products are actually.

Your particular Drive is Fast,Quiet,Cool Running,,and arguably THE most reliable.

It's one of the most Overlooked & Underrated drives on the market.

Very nice addition to your PC

Hope that helps,,,Good Luck

I even have by no ability seen a HD that has an IDE besides as a Sata connection yet while it does then i do no longer see why you need to no longer be waiting to connect with a working laptop or pc, be it your PC1 or PC37. Btw, your PC2 in basic terms has an IDE connection? through fact it ought to have 2 IDE connections. And once you're saying it has "no longer something that would want for use with a tricky tension." then you definately are incorrect through fact through fact it has 2 IDE connections then you definately would desire to connect as much as 4 tricky drives to it. except i'm lacking some thing, if so... sorry. yet while messing with tricky drives be certain you recognize on the subject of the slave vs grasp configurations via ability of changing pins on the lower back, with the exception of that, and the reality you ought to consistently have your pc off with the plug off the socket while doing this then something would be performed.

most new computers now are using SATA HD, older ones are using ATA/IDE. You might also see SCII, but you'll barely see it. Anyway, the diff between SATA and ATA/IDE is the connector.

SATA using the very thin and slim cable, like the side of your finger, and the connectors of its ends are much smaller too.

While ATA/IDE are using the same type of cable, but much bigger, like the size of your 3 fingers putting side-by-side, and of course also the connectors.

Many motherboards (MB) will support both and have both connectors for your choice of HD.

So, go ahead, get it and enjoy.

Your computer uses a SATA hard drive. The Samsung drive you are looking at is an E-IDE hard drive. You would need to add a E-IDE card to use the E-IDE drive. SATA is 15-30 times faster than E-IDE.
