I have upgraded my Motherboard from AMD with MSI Ultra2 to a i5 750 CPU with a Gigabyte GA-P55-USL3L motherbaord.

I have added 4GB RAM DDR3 and now wish to conduct a Windows XP Professional "repair install" to boot the computer using the new hardware. I have built the PC with min hardware, and Win XP Pro CD is in the drive with SP2 but i am encountering a dialog "Copy Error", with the detail that "Setup cannot find", for example, "msdtcuiu.dll" under the Installing Windows section of the GUI Windows Installer.

Funnily enough, when i click on browse CD, the files are on there, but windows wont seem to copy or recognise them?!!??!

I' flummoxed x-(

Try a different cd drive.

There are 2 possible reasons for this error. 1. The CD is scratched or otherwise damaged and the DVD/CD Rom is having issues reading the file or 2. The DVD/CD Drive is having issues reading discs altogether.

If the disc is scratched, it may be possible to copy the disc using another computer using a very slow read speed, then use the copied disc to reinstall or repair windows.

If the drive is having issues reading CDs altogether, fitting another drive, either temporarily or permanently should solve the issue.

I would recommend backing up your data and re-installing windows over repairing an existing installation anyway as repairing windows will typically compound any issues you may already be experiencing. I realise you've only replaced hardware, however a clean install will always be more stable than a repair.

Good luck!

You probably need to change drivers for some of your peripherals due to your motherboard change.

In general you want to do a repair install and NOT use the repair console.

Detailed instructions for a repair install are here http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm He also describes how to create an XP disk with the service pack included easily.

If you can no longer do a repair install or find it too complicated, DO NOT reformat and reinstall as this will wipe you out and leave you with nothing but the operating system. You would have to reinstall all your programs and much of your data would be inaccessible.

Reimage can repair your system even if a repair install fails. It costs a little but it is well worth it to save your data. It takes about 30 minutes and preserves your programs and data. If you are not happy with the results, you don't have to pay and you can reverse any changes that it made. too many changes at once has confused windows and it thinks it's on another computer, repairing the installation won't help.Reset the bios to boot from cd and use windows own setup prog. You may loose your files on harddrive, reinstate old board and cpu then backup all needed files or uninstall everything and refit new board and pcu.Try disconnecting all drives from board and check bios settings with drives one by one,fit extra harddrive and install windows on that one instead and transfer files across.

You should boot Windows to safe mode first, which will disable all third party drivers automatically.

Then uninstall old hardware driver in safe mode. then restart and install new ones.

my suggestion would be to start a fresh install of windows instead of the repair install.
