I have a computer with an NTFS partition. It has many viruses and I have to get a file off of it. I've tried a boot disk to try to get the file through DOS. Windows will load but can't get past all of the viruses at all. Tried Safe mode as well. Is there a certain type of start-up disk that will allow you to rescue a file??? What else could I try? Thank you!!

See if you can locate a copy of an old program called diskedit that was orignally part of the Peter Norton tools. If that fails any other diskeditor that permitts reading of the disk without OS supervision. There are also programs that allow the reading of a disk that is ID'd as RAW. The program will need to have the ability to move the problem to another disk. If you can find someone that will make you a 98 boot disk that will get you around the OS that is on the Primary boot disk.

Remove this disk from your machine. Get and inexpensive disk and mount it in the old disk's place. Do a clean XP install to the new disk. Install the old disk as a second drive. Boot up and carefully copy what you need to the new drive or to an external, thumb drive or whatever. Then remove the affected partition from the old drive and reestablish and reformat.

Hopefully, good as new!

You can use windows diskmgmt, but I use Norton Partition Magic. Very easy and safe to use.

One you can't run a DOS aplication in Win XP without help of another software of microsoft. If you can boot than this is a perfect advise. Run a portable antivirus for that file. Portable software are those who does not need installation on PC but simply run from Pen drive & scan or clean registry or tweak system & what not. Than write on a CD/DVD. Now format xp & install OS & all programs, but be sure that aplications S/W does not have any antivirus. Now attach your Pendrive to your PC & scan them with your updated Antivirus & anti spyware. If you find one & you have Win XP SP 2 than simply copy them & they will not be able to infect your system till you open them. Before opening scan them & delete them.

Download a copy of Knoppix ( linux),, then set your computer to boot to the cd first. It will load Knoppix on top of your o/s the desktop will look a little different but you will be able to click on the hard drive icon, then you put a usb key in and move the files you want to the key.

One thing I have done that works great is to put your hard drive as a secondary hard drive in a computer that is not infected. From there you can safely scan for viruses or even back up info and then reformat the drive.

If I were you I would take that HDD out and plug it into another computer [being sure this one has decent anti-virus software]. Once in the new computer you can turn it on - then in My Computer you should be able to see all of the files you need on the new drive. [D:\ E:\ ... etc]
