how to read mac music files on pc?

so my friend took all his music off a pc and put it on an external hardrive he then converted it so he could store the music on a mac but not through i tunes. now i want to put the music on my pc but when i plug in the external harddrive it shows up in the control panel however i cannot open it to drag out the files how can i convert it back or get the music out?

1. The hard drive is formatted to HFS+. Windows cannot natively read HFS+, you'll need a third party application to access HFS+ drives.

2. You're media player can't encode the music files due to lack of specific codec. You'll have to download them, or use a different media player like VLC player.
