I have a question about the AMD Athlon 64 Processor,Please LOOK?

Question

Right now i have an Intel Pentium 4 32-Bit processor at 2.4Ghz. I found and AMD Athlon 64-Bit processor at the same clock speed (2.4Ghz). I have two questions about this processor:
1. Will it still run slower or faster then my 2.4Ghz 32-Bit Intel?
2. If i run a 32-Bit program will it still run like my current Intel Processor since it is 32-bit and runs at 2.4Ghz?
I saw this AMD Athlon 64 on a Compaq.

1. AMD stopped using conventional naming methods for its processors because the clock-speed wasn't a true indicator of its performance. Since you're looking at a 2.4GHz AMD, I'm assuming it's the AMD Athlon 64 3800+. This means, in AMD's eyes, their 2.4GHz chip runs at the equivalent of a 3.8GHz processor. So, in short, yes you will see a performance increase at about the same pace as if you moved to an Intel 3.8GHz chip.



2. Yes, as others have said the Athlon 64 runs 32-bit applications and operating systems.

I agree with TropicSon, It will indeed run faster, but being the owner of a 64-bit AMD Athlon X2 4200+, the increased speed will not be much noticeable. I would still recommend it though because of the multi-tasking capabilities. That is what I use it for...

All you really need to know is that the AMD 64 runs 32/64 bit processing.It will run all your current stuff and if you should decide to run a 64 bit Windows or 64bit Linux,you can. You are good to go buddy.Have fun.

the 64 means it can handle a 64-bit OS setup.



speed-wise depends on the processor speed and the cache it has.



and yes it can handle a 32-bit setup. This will come in handy if you plan to upgrade to vista when it becomes available, as that will be a 64-bit system.

The AMD 64-bit processor runs 32bith code natively... In other words you will not see a loss in performance.

In reality, there will be an increase in performance of the 32bit equivilant processor.

pentium: the premium (high quality) microprocessor, developed by intel

celeron: a less-expensive version of the pentium often used in low-end, or home pc's

athlon: an imatation pentium from intel from rival AMD. the athlon is just as good as the pentium though less expensive

i myself would continue using the more popular and respected intel pentium 4 processor

It will run a faster clock speed, not that you will be able to see the difference. It will run faster on the 64 bit machine but not enough that you will SEE it.
