I have an FX-6300, and an asus m5a97 le r2.0 and I wanted to know what would be the best cpu upgrade for a better gaming performance without changing my motherboard. I'm looking for the $170 to $250 price range. (Do not suggest intel. The m5a97 has an +am3 socket)

That is a pretty decent motherboard, upgrading to a 990FX motherboard would likely offer a very small performance upgrade over the 970 chipset. (it has higher hyper-transport speed)

The fx6300 is still decent for gaming, you could think of getting a cpu cooler l;ike CM 212 evo or something and overclock it.

The FX8320 often goes on sale for under $120.

You dont list your graphics card. upgrading that will give you the biggest gaming performance increase of all.

i think the rough rule of thumb is that your GPU should not cost more than 1.5 times the new cost of your CPU. beyond that -- you'll likely get bottlenecking problems due to the CPU and more money won't help.

try reading tomshardware.com online and see if they've built anything using that FX-6300 APU -- they'll have sized the GPU correctly to fit.

same power envelope as the fx6300 better performance due to 2 extra cores

at 95 instead of 125 its easier to controll temperatures and prevent throttling the 125 chips of fx run just too hot
