i'd advise you to get a dell or a mac. the mac is becoming very popular and seems to have a good name. dell has a really good name too. gateway and hp aren't rated as high.

All the brands you mentioned has a good enough track record and all of them are most likely made in China (you can check it out). I personally use an Acer Aspire 4520 (laptop), made by a Taiwan-base computer company and I am very much satisfied with its features and performance even at a budget price.
For all practical intents and purposes I would go for HP with its cool designs. Also I'm partial to a Windows-based system rather than a Mac-based one . In getting a PC, there are five primary things to consider:
The Processor: Today's standards are multi-cores starting at 2.0 Ghz (AMD Turion and Intel Centrino are pretty much at par)
The Front Side Bus: The norm starts from 553 Ghz up
The L2 Cache: At least 1 MB
The hard drive: 120 GB-300 GB will suffice
The memory: At least 2.0 GB for Vista
Some dealers can let you customize according to your specifications.

A computer shouldn't be judged by who it's manufacturer was. It really doesn't matter. but, the things you definitely SHOULD look for in a computer are:
Hard Drive Space: I would go for at least 200 GB for decency, but a good one will be around 250 GB: The more the merrier!
RAM (a.k.a. Memory): A decent amout would be 2 GB of RAM, but in laptops i setlle for about 4. But i need higher needs for my program files.
OS (Operating System): In windows: Windows Vista Ultimate. It covers everything other types of Vista do, and more.
in Apple/Macintosh: Mac OS X Leopard. I'm not sure what the latest version of this is though.
Those are the top things you should be looking for. I hope i helped: but don't let a company fool you into buying a really expensive crappy computer/laptop.

A mac...hands down. That will be my next choice when I need another computer. They cost more, but they last forever and you don't need all the anti-virus programs for them. If you are going to stick with a microsoft system then get an emachine. You get an enormous amount of computer for a very cheap price which will allow you to protect it properly. Go with Kaspersky. It blows away McAfee or Norton, or anything else out there.

I personally hate Mac. They're terrible. Overpriced, restrictive, boring, etc.
I'd recommend an HP or a Dell.
WTF do Mac owners think that because they can run Windows, Mac is better? My PC can run Windows, every version of Linux, FreeBSD, Unix, and even OS X. Shouldn't that make it better?
Edit: surprise surprise,4 thumbs down already from Mac lovers. If they knew anything about computers, they'd see that I was clearly stating an opinion. Mac users are idiots. Don't be an idiot.
