Question:
My Computer Problems?
2008-11-02 19:41:30 UTC
Lately something seems to be wrong with my computer:
When I start it up,it takes a minute for the login screen to fully load into my desktop

When I want to open my internet it takes like 15 seconds for 1 window to open,if I click 3-4 times all open at the same time

At random times when I want to open a folder on my computer a folder opens but it just freezes up(like the folder doesn't completely load so the folder is all blank)

I did a virus scan on 3 different scanners and nothing appeared(I used NOD,AVG,AdAware so please don't recommend a scanner) so what is wrong with my computer? I have over 30GB of space.

Defrag, Disk Clean Up, More RAM maybe?

This is just minor performance issues.

1. Run defrag on your C: drive. Double click my computer and then right click on the C: drive. Select properties, tools tab, defragment. Click on defragment button.

2. Click the start button and in the RUN bar type "msconfig" (without quotations). Select the startup tab. Uncheck programs that you do not need to run at startup. If you are not familiar with this it will require for you to google some of the programs so that you won't uncheck the wrong thing. In the long run this will decrease the time it takes to start windows and it frees up resources (cpu time and ram) for windows to run efficiently.

-After reboot you will get a window stating that window configurations have changed. Check the box that says don't show again and press ok.

3. Do a hardware assessment. Need more ram? faster cpu? hard drive healthy?

Its possible a lot of your CPU processing power is being used and your system is just slowing down. It happend to many peoples computers.

You could be running out of RAM. Depending on what you are doing you probably want at least 1 GB these days if not more

Press CTRL-SHIFT-ESC to open the task manager. Click on the processes tab. You can sort the memory column by clicking on it. Look at what programs/processes are taking up the most memory. Can you shut down any of these? Usually the answer is yes. Even your Antivirus programs can take up much needed system resources.

If you hear your fan running alot (not the Hard Disk fan but the other one) then you can bet your CPU is running alot and it may be hurting your overall performance.

Cleaning the drive and defragmenting may help as someone else mentioned as well
