hey all, i am going to use these components for my new build:
POWERCOLOR PCS+ AX5770 1GBD5-PPG Radeon HD 5770
4gb ddr3 ram
hec XPOWER780 780W ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V v2.91
HITACHI HDS721050CLA362 (0F10381) 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
MSI 890GXM-G65 AM3 AMD 890GX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon II X3 435 Rana 2.9GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Processor

the cheapness of this build all depends on if i can use my old HP Pavilion a6767c case and optical drive, but remove all of the older components. I just want to remove the psu, motherboard, hard drive and replace them with my new parts. i made sure i got a microATX mobo because thats what the old HP Pavilion motherboard type was. is this all ok?

Usually that will work. You'll need to check the front panel connections. Sometimes OEM computer manufacturers (notoriously Dell) use non-standard connectors for such things as the power & reset buttons, as well as indicator lights. HP is usually pretty standard, though the connectors might not be well labeled.

I'm going to assume you have an OS available. The OEM version that came with that HP is usually not transferable to a new motherboard. If you upgraded to System 7 along the way, the upgrades ARE transferable to new hardware.

I'm not overwhelmed by hec power supplies, but that's a personal opinion. Since you're getting one rated for 780W (peak, not continuous) on a system that should only pull about 250W at full load, I don't see a problem there.

780W is gonna be a ton more than you actually *need*, but I don't see the harm in building for the future. That being said, don't sell yourself short and buy a cheap (or cheap made) PSU. A bad PSU can ruin *everything* in your system.
