I have got a laptop that has Windows XP professional on it but I don't have any logon details.
I don't have the recovery disk so can not use that. Any ideas.

hi mike

this is a common issue with some windows end-users who buy p.c,s privately and from other guys, the previous owners have set specific logon details and forgot to let the new owner know the passwords ect

to disable the windows logon screen you need to gain access to user accounts in control panel however since you need to get into the windows desktop to do this you will need to use "safe mode" instead

start up your p.c and gently tap the f8 key until you see the safe mode prompt screen, then choose safe mode and press enter, you will then see a option to use system restore, click yes to continue to the safe mode desktop

then go to start>control panel>user accounts and delete any active accounts and save any changes

once all accounts have been removed restart the p.c and upon restart you will be able to load windows without any logon or passwords

also sometimes some users also set a bios password, this is done from within the bios set up and is used to create a second layer of security, however to delete this all you need to do is remove the cmos retention battery for 20 seconds and then place it back

this will reset the bios and all you need to do then is reset the time,date...reconfigure boot order..and if you wish re apply a bios password, however this isnt neesecary unless you are using your p.c on a public network or in a busy office

any problems let me know

good luck mate !

if the laptop is a dell then there is a certain program that can change the admin password but i think owning the program is illegal!

you could however restore the whole lot by:

switching on,

pressing f8 or delete on certain boards,

(now your looking for an option to change the boot order from c drive to whatever you pc cd/dvd rom drive is)

set the order to boot from cd/dvd first,

switch off and put your windows xp/98/me etc install disc in,

turn the computer on and wait for the disc to auto start,

eventually you will see a screen asking you to install,

follow the on screen prompts.

tip: normally i format the hard drive and do a fresh install, if you wish to do that then do the same as above and look out for an option to reformat or format the drive!

hope that helps!

p.s if you need a more in depth answer then do not hesitate to ask!

There are various ways, obviously the simplest is getting hold of a copy of XP Pro, and reformatting, make sure it matches the version on the XP sticker on the laptop obviously, so you can use the key.

There are programs lurking around the web that will let you override any passwords requested by Windows, so enabling you to go into control panel and reset them.

I'm presuming of course, that this is legit and you haven't just done over my country pile and oiked my laptop...lol?

Hope that helps

There are a few ways to do this.

If your login screen shows a little icon and when you click on it you can type your password in press CTRL, ALT and DEL twice. This will bring you to an alternative login prompt. Type administrator into the first box, make sure the second box (the password one) is empty. Now log in, and use user accounts to fix your problem.

Another way is to download a program from http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/. Use this to wipe your password.

BriantheSnail123 is about right although with some PCs you have to leave the CMOS battery out for at least 30 minutes, sometimes more, to erase it. Better to use the CMOS reset jumper if the PC motherboard has one.

Switch off. and on restarting keep pressing F8 then restore to last time you got in. Well that's what I did it worked for me

start in safe mode, use the admin account, then go to control panel, user accounts and delete the passwords from all the other accounts.
