Mainframe is a High performance Multi User computer system which is the most scalable, available, reliable and secured machine in the world capable of performing some Million Instructions per second (upto 569,632 MIPS) with the following characteristics:

Mainframes are large computers used by big companies or organizations. Really large computers. They are extremely stable and often run for years without being shutdown. They are often accompanied by "disk farms" which can be rooms full of (again very large) disks to hold massive amounts of data. Mainframe computational speed is measured in mips (millions of instrucrtions per second).
