my home computer is about 6 years old but it is in good shape (dell dimension 8200 i think). i don't know the processor speed or RAM off the top of my head, but they are fine.

the computer runs painfully slowly however. opening the simplest folders seems to take ages.

how can i clean this machine up so it is usable? i had a friend reformat another computer and it worked wonders. how do i reformat a pc if that is the best option?

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser

2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".

3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.

4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.

5. Click OK.

3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:

1. Open your Start menu.

2. Click Run

3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"

4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab

5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.

6. Click "OK"

Other great tip is increasing your virtual memory to simulate more RAM. This will give you a bit more resources for multiple program use or CPU heavy programs.

Hope this link helps. Shows you how to do everything step by step. You should get a least 60-120% more resources and speed

if you follow the tips.

there's any number of issues that can cause a computer to slow down. Here's what I'd check (in rough order):

1. Check harddrive capacity. If you are not getting error messages (e.g. "Drive C: is nearly full") this shouldn't be a problem. If it's at 60-80%, you probably need to clean up useless files by running Disk Cleanup and then defragmenting the HD. In extreme cases, old programs you no longer use need to be erased, or additional storage capacity needs to be added.

2. Check if you have useless programs running in the background. Press "ctrl-alt-del". This will bring up the task manager. If your CPU is constantly running at 50-80% capacity, you need to remove background programs. Then, follow the steps for removing spyware the other person posted above.

3. Check your anti-virus program. Many AV programs today are incredibly inefficient. AVG, for example, on stock settings, will run a harddrive scan EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU START YOUR COMPUTER. At my workplace, this causes the laptops to run glacially. Ending the hd scan may speed up your computer. Also, if you are running McAffee or Norton Antivirus, it scans every single button and mouse press you do. Try closing your AV and seeing if it helps with the speed. For McAffee, go to the task manager and end the process called "ccApp.exe."

After you check these, then you should turn your attention towards the hardware, but these are the major culprits.

There are MANY reasons for computer slow downs:

a] not enough memory

b] too many programs starting up with windows at boot up time

c] spyware

d] too many junk files

e] too many restore points

Routine maintenance the will definitely help restore your PC's speed to what it could/should be...

1. Increase your Virtual Memory, then

2. Download and run PageDefrg (free tool from Microsoft).

3. Run MSCONFIG and deactivate any startup programs that you DON'T want/need to run at boot time

4. Uninstall any unwanted programs

5. Ensure that you have more than 500 MB's of free space on your C: drive. (if not, it's not IF your PC will crash...it's WHEN your PC crashes). If not, move your Music/Videos offline to DVD's or CD's.

6. Purge all temp folders and internet temp files

7. Run defrag again after all the cleanup you just did.

8.install Registry cleaner and run daily

9. install Antispyware and run daily

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!

yes, its painfully called system restore, i had a problem with my pc like this, it was 5 yeats old, the only way to get it back to how it was when you got it is system restore, find the old disks that came with it, look for the operating cd or the restore cd, put it in when ure pc is on, load it up and follow the menus, choose system restore, this deletes everythin that wasnt on ure pc originally so make a backup of documents, so then all malware and viruses, old software and corrupt files will be deleted, and ure pc will run smooth and be like new again, make sure you write ure internet details down aswell. seriously this is the only way, i tried so many things and this was the only way or gettin vmy pc back to original speed :)

good luck!!

There may be two reasons why your PC is running slow.

1. You havn't cleant up your PC for a long time.

2. You have got a virus or spyware on your PC.

You may search http://answers.yahoo.com for answers

you cant reformat it, its installed with an OEM copy of windows. its a system builders pack that allows only one install on one computer. try downloading CCleaner and running it. then defragment the hard drive, do a disk clean up and then get inside the case with a can of compressed air and blow off everything. dust makes the system run hotter and heat makes the system run slower...

I've installed Linux on several systems with these same specs and it runs great! Try Vector Linux, I've installed it on 233mmx based systems and it runs very well, and it's free!
