Hi, i am 14 years old and i am getting a new computer. i wanted to ask which was the best buy for a computer. nothing too expensive and nothing too cheap. im not using it for gaming and stuff. just using it maybe for school things and other things such as listening to the buffalo sabres games. i want a monitor that looks nice on the outside, preferebly a silver color. (pretty much, i want a computer i could use for normal things during the day, nothing too special.

For cheap, Walmart just came out with a $300 computer. Nothing fancy at all, and it's probably just the computer sans monitor.

Go to Dell, click on desktops for home/home office, and you should see 3 different computers, Inspiron from $349, XPS from $999, and XPS Gaming for $1699. Of course, that's where it starts for each section and goes up from there.

I was happy with a few HP computers I owned, but not with the compaqs I owned, and now they are merged I have no idea what the level of standards are, so I can't recommend or negate them.

I'm a big Sony fan for other electronics, but somehow never bought a VAIO computer, a few friends who had laptops were happy with them.

If you get one with Vista installed, make sure you have AT LEAST 1GB of RAM. Just about any new processor will be fine for surfing the web and such, but if you change your mind later about games, you can always upgrade it.

Go to HP and tell them what you want to do with it and they will basically tell you what parts you need. Just so you have a general idea of what to get and dont get majorly ripped off, heres around what you should get.

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon 64 X2 around 2.0 ghz

RAM: 1 gb

Hard drive: between 160 and 250 GB

Video Card: Around 100 dollars and with 256 mb ram

Sound Card: 30 to 50 bucks because you want it for listening to the games

Monitor: Get the size you want and dont buy this from HP because theirs are black/expensive

I would go with a middle priced dell. emachines are sketchy. sony and mac are way overpriced for someone who just needs a basic system.
