If your using XP the minimum amount of memory needed is 512 for decent performance. A full gig is better. If you have Vista, which I doubt, Then you need at least 2 GiG for it to run well.

You processor looks ok so it is probably the low RAM you have. I'd upgrade to as much as I could afford up to the motherboards max.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

CCleaner is the best tool on the market to clean up your pc. Download here http://j.mp/UrAEMJ

It's the best choice.

I am guessing you mainly surf the web, maybe watch movies/vids online and wordprocess/spreadsheet so i would get a new cheap computer with a AMD 3000+ or Pentium D 925+ which are dirt cheap these days! Slap on 2GB RAM, 1650 Radeon and get 160GB hard disk and thats a decent budget 'media center' PC Oh and maintain it with free yet effective security like Avast, Ad-aware, spybot, comodo , etc Cos if your budget is higher then Core 2 Duo and better is a good choice ^^

I would agree that a big factor is the amount of memory the machine has installed. Before going out and buying some, I would try one of the online scanners some vendors provide. The reason is they can tell you which type of memory to buy for your system. They also provide several options as part of the answer depends on how your memory banks are configured and whether your motherboard supports dual-channel.

Your processor seems to be fine - 2.4GHz is plenty for web browsing and using word processors and the like.

I would recommend getting as much RAM as your computer can hold. RAM is relatively cheap these days and will make your PC run much smoother. This is an especially good solution for when you get "Virtual Memory is Low" errors. I would not purchase less than 1GB (1024 MB) or RAM.

Another thing to check is how many programs you have when your PC starts. Is the task tray at the bottom right of your screen full of icons - say more than 5 or 6? If so, you have too many programs running at the same time, and this kills your RAM. Go to your Start Menu, then Programs, Then Start Up and delete anything in that folder that you do not need when you first turn on your PC.

Also, consider running anti-spyware programs. Use AdAware and Spybot Search-and-Destroy to dectect and delete anything that may be running in the background that you don't know about - things like advertising and such.

Finally, run a good Defragment on your hard drive. Go to Start > Programs > Windows Explorer, then find your C: drive, right click on it, and click properties. Go to the tools tab, click the "Defragment" button, and then press the "Defragment" button on the next screen. You should see a screen full of different colored squares moving around. This will take several hours, and when it is finished will help your computer find files on your hard drive faster.

Your computer specs are fine. 2.4GHz Intel Celeron is plenty of processing power for browsing, word processing, music, etc. 40GB hard drive is good enough. You just need to upgrade your RAM to 1GB because that's why you are getting low virtual memory messages, and everything is loading slow including web browsing. Buying more RAM will help speed up your computer, RAM doesn't slow it down, apps will run better and you can multitask without slow down problems. While you are waiting for your RAM modules to come, try these things to make your computer run a little better:

[Msconfig]

1. Click Start.

2. Click Run.

3. Type in Msconfig.

4. Msconfig will open then click on the Startup tab.

5. Uncheck apps you don't want booting up.

Disabling apps will speed up boot time and give you more RAM to run things. Don't disable anti virus, spyware, or whatever. Leave them enabled but you could disable Quicktime Player, Realplayer, IM, P2P, etc.

[Check Disk]

1. Double click on My Computer.

2. Right click on your hard drive which is C:

3. Click Properties.

4. Click the Tools tab.

5. Click the "Check Now.." option.

6. Check Disk for Local drive should load up.

7. Make sure "Automatically Fix System File Errors" and "Scan and attempt recovery of bad sectors" are checked. Click Start then reboot your machine. These

two options will take a while but to make sure you don't have bad sectors or system file errors which will slow down your machine. You only need to run both options once a month. You should run the

"Automatically Fix System File Errors" once a week like a Saturday night. System file errors will slow down your computer. If you got too many bad sectors,

or your hard drive is making a noise, replace the drive.

[Disk Cleanup]

1. Click Start.

2. Click Run.

3. Type in cleanmgr.

4. This will analyze your hard drive for files that need to be removed.

5. Check everything.

6. Click OK.

7. Click Yes.

8. Disk Cleanup will then remove files.

[Remove cookies, temp, and &Temp% files]

1. Click Start.

2. Click Run.

3. Type in Cookies, Temp, or %Temp%.

4. Go to Edit.

5. Click Select All.

6. Go to Files and Click Delete.

7. Right click on your Recycle Bin and click "Empty Recycle Bin" to delete files.

[Disk Defragmenter]

1. Click Start.

2. Click Programs.

3. Click Accessories.

4. Click System Tools.

5. Click Disk Defragmenter.

6. Disk Defragmenter will load on your screen, click

Analyze. If it says you need to defrag this volume, click Defragment. If it says you don't need to defrag this volume, still click Defragment. Make sure all applications are closed. Right click on your anti virus app icon and choose Exit, Quit, or Close before defragging. After defragging your HD, reboot your machine. You only need to defrag your hard drive when your PC starts running slow.

[Scan for spyware and other nasties]

1. Get Windows Defender from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en&mg_id=10134.

2. Click Continue to Validate Windows.

3. Click Download to download Windows Defender.

4. Click the first option.

5. Go through the prompts.

6. Windows Defender automatically download up to date definitions.

7. Go to Start, Programs, and click Windows Defender, click Scan at the top and choose Full Scan.

You might have to run Windows Defender in Safe Mode to find any nasties.

[Viruses and other things]

1. Go to http://free.grisoft.com and download AVG Free Edition 7.5 for Windows.

2. Install

3. Double click on the icon.

4. Click Update and choose Internet to download up to date virus definitions.

5. Click Scan Computer to scan your whole hard drive

for viruses to delete.

6. Also, click on Scan Selected Areas and check folders, hard drive, etc. then click Scan to start

scanning and deleting viruses.

You might have to run AVG in Safe Mode. To get to Safe Mode to run AVG and Windows Defender, reboot your machine, keep clicking F8, click enter on your

OS, click Safe Mode. Don't not click on Safe Mode Networking since you don't want to go online. You want to scan for spyware and viruses that can't be

found at Windows bootup. After you are done with Safe Mode, click Restart to return to Windows

mode.

[Uninstall apps]

1. Click Start.

2. Double click Control Panel.

3. Click Add/Remove Programs.

4. Go through Add/Remove Programs list and click Remove to uninstall apps you don't use anymore like old utilities, games, etc. Don't disable Windows Defender, AVG, etc. Right after you are done, you might have to reboot your machine, go ahead do it, then defrag your computer again.

[Slow Internet Page Loads]

You might need to tweak your registry. That's why pages are loading slow. The default settings for broadband isn't good and fast enough. Try this:

1. Download TCP Optimizer to your desktop by going

to http://wwww.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe

and click Save, choose Desktop icon.

2. Double click on TCP Optimizer which is an icon with a screw driver and wrench on it.

3. You should be in General Settings with a bunch of

settings all grayed out.

4. Call your ISP tech support to find out what you

are capped at, e.g. 7Mbps, 6Mbps, 5Mbps, 8Mbps, etc.

5. For the connection slider, click 3000Kbps, 6000Kbps, 7000Kbps, or whatever your download is, click Optimal Settings then Apply Changes, Yes to backup the registry files, then this app will automatically reboot your machine.

6. See if webpages are loading faster.

You need to run TCP Optimizer once to tweak your registry. Leave it alone because it helps speed up your page loads.

---- Scan for spyware and viruses everyday. Make sure defintions for both Windows Defender and AVG are kept up to date.

--- I do these things I listed on my ten month old Windows MCE 2005 PC and it really made a difference in page and apps loads. Do NOT buy one of those apps

that promise to speed up your computer. It doesn't work. But, doing the things I'm telling you works and it's free. You can print them out if you want.

increasing the ram can improve the speed but u need more than that. u need to upgrade your processor intel celeron is slow processor so u need to upgrade at least pentium 4. if u want faster than that u should upgrade to intel core 2 or intel core 2 duo. than ur hardisk by increasing your spce u can make some more virtual memory. I change my computer virtual memory from 300 mb to 3000 mb.And one more thing your computer slow becoz' your hardisk just too old so u need to change your hardisk with new one. having 2 much program run at once also one of the factor your family computer are getting slow. u can check your computer processor by run task manager by combination of CTRL+ALT+DEL key to open it.

Thats not enough ram for any of the modern OS's meaning Vista and XP all versions will run like crap. Windows 2000 might be ok, but it wont be fast.

Ram is cheaper than it has ever been right now so I'd pick up about 1GB. Shouldn't run you more than about $50. You can get 1gb PC3200 for as little as $25 on eBay right now.

The main Problem now is the Ram,,,,,it must be at least 1 GB(1014mb" I highly ask you to Upgrade the Ram to 1 Gb then your computer wil Fly so fast ..here are several things you can do to increase the "speed" of your computer.

1) Clean up the disk. Uninstall unneeded programs (especially those that run at startup and/or put something in the system tray), run Disk Cleanup, and defragment the drive. This is a good first step that will almost always take a few seconds off boot time and application loads for any computer.

2) Stomp auto-starting programs. Click Start > Run and type "msconfig" at the prompt. Click the Startup tab and look at all that junk that loads when you launch your PC. Do you really need "Adobe Reader Speed Launch"? Probably not. Turn off anything else that looks useless, but be careful not to disable your anti-virus and important system components.

3) Run a full anti-virus and anti-spyware scan. I would recommend using AVG Free Anti-virus, Spybot - Search and Destroy spyware remover and Ad-aware spyware remover. These programs are all free.

4) Clean up the registry. CCleaner, available at http://www.ccleaner.com is free and worth running. It will also remove unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.

Those are the easy and free things you can do. If your computer is still slow you need to move on to the bigger guns.

1) Upgrade RAM. This is the one killer trick that will make almost any computer run faster. With an older PC, you will rarely have enough RAM to run today's memory-hogging operating systems and applications, and adding a high-capacity stick or two of quality RAM will give you a quick speed boost. Adding RAM is fairly simple, even for a novice, and you should be able to do the job in 5 or 10 minutes. You can run a free test at http://www.crucial.com and find out what kind of RAM (memory) your computer needs.

2) Reinstall Windows. If the above tricks haven't helped, it may be time to wipe the slate clean and start again, reformatting your hard drive, reinstalling your applications, and restoring your data files from a backup. You'd be surprised how much more responsive a freshly reinstalled Windows system can be, as you've wiped out years of temp files, garbled registry entries, old versions of software programs that have been upgraded repeatedly, and all sorts of other electronic junk. Reinstalling is easy if you have the "recovery disk" that came with your PC, and only a bit more involved if you're using a retail copy of Windows XP. Just be sure you back up everything you want to take with you before you pull the trigger!

3) Upgrade your hard drive. This is a more complicated solution, but if you're reinstalling Windows (per the prior tip) you might consider upgrading to a bigger and possibly faster hard drive, too. Hard disk storage is a performance bottleneck on every machine, and magnetic disks degrade over time. Some performance issues could be caused by a failing hard drive, even, and upgrading to a new model could really put some zip back in your system. As a bonus, you can use the original hard drive for backups or occasional storage, if you put it in an enclosure....and download these tools http://en.sergiwa.com/modules/news/

Ok try this. Def upgrade to 512 or 768. Your HD space is sufficent and your processor is fine. I have some pentium 3 2.0's running xp great. You Probibley need to clean up the pc. Download and Run CC cleaner. It does magic. Then clean the pc of Adware using Ad-Aware or spyware terminator. Internet is slow loading due to your modem. The pc's speed only affects the pc internet somewhat. The rest depends on your ISP. If nothing else helps reload the pc. If you have the XP disk boot from it and reinstall. (back up wanted files). If you dont have xp then switch to linux. Its free and fairly easy to use. And this pc will run linux like a brand new rig. I have some pc's here at work that are pentium's 500mhz with 128 ram and 8 gig hd running linux. So if that tell you anything. Hope this helps.

Well you have several problems, most easily fixable. First of all, the minimum for xp is 128. Realistically, 1 gig will get you good performance. DO NOT expect good results from 512mb of ram with a celeron processor. It will still be slow. I upgraded an office celeron running xp from 512 to 1 gig and the difference is tremendous. Not the fastest, but much, much better.

Second problem, its a celeron. Celerons are built for your budget, not speed or performance. It will never be as fast as other computers running Pentium 4s or dual core processors.

Third problem could also be spyware or viruses. If it is a family computer and you have teenagers.....Look out. My teenage sister took a fast computer and turned it into something slower than a snails pace. Clean out all spyware and do a virus check.

By adding more ram (1gig min) and cleaning out the computer, you should see immediate and noticeable results....

below is the causes of this slow pc problem ::::

Main problem :

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The processor is old and slow .....Although it has a high 2.4 GigaHertz ..........U must know that Intel Celeron is an old technology that had more than 10 year old (since 1997)..... A 2 GigaHertz Core 2 Duo processor will be much faster than your 2.4 celeron processor

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other problem :

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Insufficient Random Access Memory (RAM) ..... 128MB is inevitably insufficient for nowadays .....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I recommend you to upgrade your processor to pentium technology that is newer and much faster than celeron technology ... it is better if u can spend more money to purchase a intel Core 2 Quad or Intel core 2 Duo processor that is newer than pentium 4. Besides , you have increase your RAM or virtual memory .....I think you should increase the RAM to 1GB , instead of 512 MB...(For your inormation , if your RAM is insuficient , it will use some space on your hard disk as 'virtual memory' ....insufficient virtual space on hard disk will resulted the "virtual memory too low" to appear when u using some heavy application ) .

If you think upgrade your computer are pretty costly , i suggest that you buy a new computer instead of ungrade that old computer. Computer nowadays are quite cheap if compared to upgrading.

Hope i can help you....
