Hi I have a Compaq Presario AMD Sempron Processor 3200+ with only 448 MB RAM...If I upgraded to lets say 2gb ram would I see any difference, if not how much?

In terms of gaming, most games today rely pretty heavily upon the GPU, the best bet would be to get a good video card with as much RAM on the card as possible. Upgrading would be helpful, but only slightly in contrast to getting a good video card.

of course you would see a definite gain ,,,

only reason you see 448 is because 64 is allocated to your onboard video memory being used,,

if your computer can handle it ,, semprons are okey cpus,, if you could put an athlon64 3200+ or higher, youd see even more of a boost,, semprons are not really known as a gaming cpu,

i dont know what model you Compaq you have, you didnt say, but i figured you probably have a socket 754 computer, or maybe a 939 ,, both older sockets but still effective, you could probably get an Athlon 64 3500+ for about 40 bucks on ebay.com and 2 gig of ram for about 50 if you shop around for a good deal,, so for about 100 bucks you could have a nice comp for a while till you decide to upgrade, and if lasts you 5 more yrs and youre fine with it,, its only costed you about 20 bucks a yr, or about 1.67 a month,, heck thats less than the cost of 2 small bottles of bottled water,,

might sound like a bit now, and youll get those people who always will tell you up grade to a dual core or something else,, but if youre happy with what youll have , this amount now will pay off in the long run , so youll have the money to spend on a nicer computer, later , and you can get a higher end computer, and will have the money to do so,

it depends on what kinds of games and softwares you run on your system

usually if you run small games with not much big graphics involvement it doesn't matter if it's 512 mb or 2gb as long as the memory which you have is more than enough to run the game smoothly.but with high graphic games like fifa09 and video editing softwares, you require at least 1 gb of ram since 512 will not be able to accommodate the entire game.

You are using 512 MB RAM,but the system showing 448 MB ram, some amount of ram is consumed for graphics,if you upgarde your ram, that's better, but you have to install a graphics card to play high end games

1 gb of graphics

Yes you will see a big difference for the better.

Here's why:

1. You will see faster boot-ups.

2. You will be able to upgrade the OS, (obviously you are running an older version that can run on the wee bit of RAM you have.

3. Games will load faster as you will not need Virtual RAM (Virtual RAM slows down your comp.)

4. Your ability to multitask will improve greatly (multitasking is leaving programs in RAM (minimized to Taskbar), which will allow you to instantly bring up a program without reloading it.

5. You will be able to play games that you presently cannot run due to the resources they require (your resources are fine except ror the RAM), so why limit yourself?

Having done a similar upgrade with a AMD 2800+ running XP starting at 512M, at 1G there was a very noticeable improvement, 1.5G was still a noticeable improvement over 1G but not as large an improvement, 2G & up was barely a noticeable improvement over 1G. With the cost of RAM being as low as it is go for the 2G.

You won't see much of a difference. You computer is way too old to handle current computing needs. I highly doubt you'll be able to find ram for it and if you do the mainboard probably won't be able to handle it. Your hard drive is most likely way to small, like 40GB range I'm sure. The Processor belongs in the Smithsonian. Don't waste your money dealing with junk ram. Save up and get a new computer.

the difference will almost make you cry...you computer will run SO much more flawlessly if you have 2gb of ram compared to 512 mb

Depending on the level of multitasking you will see a huge difference.

However, with the price of DDR1 remaining high, it might be in your best interest to upgrade your platform if you have a little bit of extra money. Basic DDR3 modules are about half the price, and will perform much better (You'll have to upgrade motherboard and CPU as well, though).

definately see a big difference, specifically for gaming though you may need a new graphics card too. but a ram upgrade will never hurt.

its a wonder your pc runs at all

yes do it now it will be huge

your pc must spend most of its time threashing teh heardrive in swap files

how can you have 448 mg of ram you can have 512 but not 448
2009-05-30 23:08:43 UTC
Wow, yes you will, you will see a major change in the amount of time it takes load up, and process games.

@ LordPerc..... He can have 448MB of RAM, because he can have a 256MB bit of RAm, along with a 192MB bit of RAM, yes they do exist :)

You'll see a huge difference. You need the memory.

u wont see much of difference except that there will be less stuttering and loading time.

yeah, you should see some pretty big difference. can't say exactly how much, but it'd be pretty significant.
