I heard laptops are more popular and are taking over computer desktops. Are desktop computers going to be obsolete anytime soon or do people still use desktop computers?

I don't think it's very likely they will be obsolete very soon. Most large companies still utilize desktops. For ex, my company has several offices across the country and each still uses desktops. A large company that I wrote a database program for recently all use desktops. Etc. The durability and longevity compared to laptops is the primary reason why.

The reason laptop sales are at the level they are at the moment is down to life expectancy. Laptops die quicker, so more are sold to fill the void

Desktops last decades and get passed around a lot, and that drives sales down.

Desktops will be around for a long time maybe cell phones will be gone in time

I don't think they'll ever become obsolete but desktops are definitely less common that they once were. We gave up our desktop at home about 8 or 9 years ago and use only laptops now. Neither of us are computer gamers and they're more than adequate for our needs. I like being able to move it around the house or travel with it if needed but I do have a smaller Surface 4 that I usually use for travel.

I still use a desktop (networked) and it offers more power, greater adaptability, and multiple monitors. I can't imagine being confined to a laptop for what I need my work computer to do.

I use laptops, but this may change. I think that there are people who don't carefully think about what kind of computer to buy, so some people end up buying one, and then they regret it afterwards. Desktop computers are much more powerful than laptops. If someone is not planning on moving a lot, then buying a desktop computer is a good option. If someone moves a lot, then buying a laptop is a better option.

Moving desktop computers is an inconvenience. Because these kind of computers are heavier than laptops.

I have seen different kinds of computers, and I know they can be custom made. If you were to look up (PC rig) on the internet, then you should be able to see the newest kind of computers that people made. Yes, you may see pictures of desktop computers, but you should also be able to see different kinds of computers.

I am not sure if desktop computers will become obsolete, but if it does, then I assume something better will replace it.

I have seen a custom made computer that is mounted on a wall. How cool is that. I guess only time will tell. If you no longer see desktop computers being made, and sold, then they just might be obsolete.

Sales of laptops surpassed sales of desktops around 15 years ago. This really isn't old news at all. You can consider that now you have tablets in the mix which compete directly with laptops, not so much desktops.

The only people who use desktops for internet and general use are the old time users who have a hard time adjusting to change. Believe it or not, there are still older people who use the old AOL webbrowser. Other than that, desktops are specifically used for Workstations and Gaming. In which case Laptops can NEVER successfully get into that segment because of hardware limitations. Desktops can also be used as file servers/NAS or a TV could be plugged into a desktop and you could use it to watch Hulu/Sling/Netflix.

In high performance situations laptops are limited. Laptops have always had cooling issues. Laptops can never match the performance of a desktop. About 3 or 4 years ago, laptop makers started soldering their high performance processors and Graphics Processing Units directly to the motherboard. Now you are stuck with whatever CPU and GPU you get with the laptop. At least a desktop is upgradable.

If anything, tablets and smartphones will virtually wipe out laptops but desktops will remain to fill the high performance niche. This is already happening and in 5 years you'll see less laptop offerings.

I don't think so because desktops are still pretty much common. Lots of businesses and companies use them. Gamers build there own for gaming. So i don't think anytime soon they will be obsolete.

No, they won't.

You can always fit much faster hardware in a desktop. They will always be cheaper because their parts are modular and can be replaced when broken.

Desktops will only become obsolete when computers get so fast there is no noticeable performance difference between a compact computer and a full size computer.

no, laptops prioritize small size and portability over performance, so desktops will always have the top performance. in situations where performance is key, desktops must be used

The desktop will be used in future. Developer and IT firms prefer desktop as they are more productive than a laptop. Easy to maintain and work.

I don't think they will as many businesses won't let the employees take the private information home see below

Not likely. Portability is the only advantage of laptops. Ever try to replace parts on a laptop versus a desktop? You must have special tools and lots of time to work on a laptop, but a desktop is fairly straight forward to work on with no special tools, and can usually be upgraded years after purchase to make it just like a new computer again. Desktops are also much easier to do maintenance on.

I know that they are being sold less. At my local Sams, they used to have many different models and brands on display, but recently, they only have 5 at the most now and they're usually HP.

I doubt that desktop computers will be obsolete any time soon, but they are slowly declining in popularity.

No. Desktops are superior to laptops despite their lower sales. Desktops are cheaper to produce, maintain and upgrade. Laptop only has one advantage, it's portability

not likely

they will get more expensive , not not obsolete

you will never get more power/performance from a laptop than you can get from a desktop

Yea, you are right. Gradually desktop is losing it's appeal. Usually, laptop has it's power backup system and it's easy to take everywhere.

So desktop is going to be obsolete day by day.

Laptops are always going to be inferior to desktops for a bunch of reasons.

-It's a lot harder to upgrade laptop parts, and depending on what part it may not even be possible.

-Laptops use hardware that is designed to be less powerful than what's available for desktops in order to save power.

-Desktops can't ever run out of battery.

-Desktops have more space for better cooling. Even the laptops that do come close to desktops in performance often have pretty bad overheating issues.

-Laptops are much more expensive than desktops with similar performance.

-Anyone who wants a high refresh rate screen can either spend $2000+ for a laptop with it or around $1000-1200 for an equivalent desktop and $200-300 for a high refresh rate monitor.

-Anyone who wants the best possible performance needs a desktop. Here's a comparison of the best currently available desktop CPU and the best currently available laptop CPU: http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i9-7920X-vs-Intel-Core-i7-7820HK/m278103vsm224965

And an equivalently specced one: http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-7700K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-7820HK/3647vsm224965

-Anyone who wants a mechanical keyboard (or a 21:9 screen) can either spend $9000 for the one laptop that has one, or get any desktop.

Nah. I prefer desktops over computers because they're big screened, is better overall for gaming ( ik there's gaming and big screened laptops ) but i still prefer Desktop.

Laptops are convenient but I just don't like it. Desktops doesn't require charging so it can't run out of battery.

Desktop > Laptop for me, anytime.

At this point in time, and the near future, laptops just do NOT have the power to do things like 3D rendering, video editing (high end stuff), animation or gaming.

Thus, desktops will remain for the foreseeable future. Desktops can run high end video, CPU and multiple disks all in one box. And, desktops can be upgraded. Laptops will never be able to power a 300W video card and a 130W CPU, plus high speed disks in Raid.
