You do need speakers. Where else would you expect sound to come from?

Are the Speakers plugged into the computer and into the electricity???

Yeah it's a stupid question to ask, but you'd be surprised... If it is New, why are you on here instead of contacting who you bought it from???

There are too many things that can be wrong with a computer to give any real advice over a question board such as this one...

I mean I can list several things that could be wrong, doesn't mean any of them will be...

Could just be bad luck and you got a lemon {aka bad sound card}... This lemon suggestion could also cover a number of other internal problems that could exist...

Double check the that the speaker wire is plugged into the proper hole, there are usually several to choose from...

Make sure the Speakers are plugged into the Outlet...

Could be that the Speakers are Bad...

I'd take it back to where you got it, if it were me...

DVI is a video connector.... is there any speakers plugged directly into the computer? (looks like a headphones jack?)

also try plugging your headphones into the 'green' headphone jack in the back (or front if you have it) and see if you can hear anything, if yes, then check to see if you have the volume muted (turn the volume up on the computer) and make sure you have all the drivers installed.

either way, if it is new, take it back to where you got it and get them to show you how THEY get it working.

Just update audio driver of your laptop by going to hp site and finding drivers for your laptop by typing laptop's model number.

Or,

Get your laptop back to the shop from where you bought the laptop and tell them about the problem, they will solve your probldm free as your laptop is in warranty period now.

Hope this helps you.

maybe you have muted it, check it first, and there is still no sound, you can ask some professional for help.

, maybe it needs this codec, it seems to be asking for it, http://download.cnet.com/IDT-High-Definition-Audio-CODEC/3000-2120_4-197119.html

Beside this whoever sold it to you should fix it free.
