The reason the computer gets slow is due to the registry files becoming corrupted, or messed up, in simple terms. These files tell the computer or laptop how to operate the software installed on the system. If any of these files get messed up, the computer is not sure what to do and this will really slow down the computer. The other scenario is where you download other software, screensavers, pictures, videos, or even music, and this will somehow change the settings on a registry file. When this happens, the original program that needs that file now has the wrong instructions in it. So, it will cause the computer to run slow, or in a worse case, crash.

You can speed up your computer with a thorough analysis and repair of your registry. The registry Scan will identify corrupt files, paths, and registry keys causing your computer to have errors and run slow.Go to http://www.registry-bot.com to download registry bot.It is the most advanced and comprehensive registry repair product on the market. It will speed up your computer and make windows startup faster.

Your mother probably made that up to convince you to get off the computer. She's wrong.

Unless you have less free space on your hard disk than you have RAM, there will be no effect on the performance of your computer.

Note, however, that Photoshop uses a large amount of RAM. Therefore, there will be less RAM available to other applications while you are running Photoshop. This does not mean that your computer has become slow, however; it just means that you are using most of the resources available.

And no, your Internet connection has no effect on this.

Adding programs does not per say slow your computer down. Neither does editing or having a lot of documents or pictures / movies. What slows a computer down, is if the CPU can handle the tasks given it (fast enough, dual / quad core etc..) and or fragmented files. Also, the number of files running in the background can cause slowdown as they take valuable resources to keep running. Do you have sufficient memory? Don't worry about loading Photoshop, that will not cause your computer to run slower.

Microsoft Registry Problems = Slow Computer!

The Windows registry, Containing information and settings for all the hardware, software, users, and preferences of your computer, whenever you make a change to the Control Panel settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in the registry.

When the Windows registry becomes very large, your computer’s can become very slow and it can cause it to be unstable.

Using cc cleaner is a very good idea. Also Defragmenting your hard drive is a good thing. Where is your computer slow? When using internet, downloading files, loading up programs, or what? Photoshop is very demanding on RAM, make sure you have at least 2 GB of RAM on your computer.

I've got a suggestion for you. Back up all your pictures to data CD's or DVD's and then ONLY LOAD the pictures you want to work on. Save on the hard disk only pictures you want to work on immediately. Then, back up the rest to CD or DVD. YOu could probably clean a lot of your computer up if you did this and at the same time, back up all your precious pictures. If the hard disk gets too full, it can crash!

Your mom is partly right...the fuller a hard disk gets, the longer it takes for the computer to retrieve information. The other guy was right about having too many fragmented files and junk files.

So first, move all your pics to CD/DVD. This backs them up which is a VERY good idea! Now, in case something happens to the hard disk, you will not loose your pics. Then delete the backed up files off the hard disk. You have them safetly saved to CD or DVD.

THen, run CCLeaner, a free utility you can download and run here:

http://www.ccleaner.com/

You also need to defrag your registry and clean that up for errors. You can get a free disk defragger and registry defragger from Auslogics here:

Download them and run them:

http://www.auslogics.com/en/software

This will help to speed up the computer and make it more efficient and by cleaning stuff up off the hard disk, you will increase the available space so you can put Photoshop on it.

The other guy was right too, about adding more physical memory and reducing the amount of stuff running in the background, like in the system tray.

Try this trick:

Go to Start, RUN, and enter MSCONFIG

Go to the startup tab and uncheck EVERYTHING, save, reboot the computer. This will unload a bunch of garbage that is running in the background.

Also, go to black viper's site on the net and consult about what to turn off in system resources - things that run but are not really needed - like remote logins for example. You can safety follow black vipers advice and unload some unnecessary stuff running in the background:

http://www.blackviper.com/

There...now that you have done all this stuff, your computer should be running almost like it did when it was brand new!
