Question:
DVD decoder is missing and can't play DVD's... how can I fix it without buying a new decoder?

When we try to play DVD's, we get a error message saying "cannot play DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer". And we used to be able to play DVD's. A few months ago we had Geek Squad get rid of a bunch of viruses. Im wondering if they erased or if the viruses did??? Is there a way to reinstall one without having to buy one? And if not, where is a good place to purchase? :(

Go online and download a free software that decodes DVD.

Google for "vlc" (Video Lan Client);it's a (free) DVD player that generally "just works".

Or, find the CDs that came with your computer; one of them probably has all the DVD player software needed.

Reinstall the software that came bundled with your DVD drive.

Download and install K-Lite codecs. They are free and I never have any problems.

I used to have the same problem. Google and download "XP Codec Pack" and "K-Lite mpeg pack", this will solve your problem!
