Question:
Upgrade my old Apple computer?

I have a very old eMac, not sure what model but its from around 2002-03.
It's been upgraded but videos, online and otherwise are pretty choppy. I don't know much about computers but if you tell me what I need to buy/download, I can probably figure it out. I want to upgrade the processor, memory and graphics card so that they are as close to current day computers.

Stats
Version: 10.4.11
Processor: 700 MHz PowerPC G4
Memory: 640 MB SDRAM
Startup Disk: 40GIG MO-FO

Ask if you need more info.

Based on your specs, this appears to be an original eMac from 2002. It can only take up to 1 GB RAM (PC100 SDRAM, which is hard to find these days - PC133 should also work). I haven't seen any reports of processor upgrades that work in an eMac. The graphics card is AGP which is also getting hard to find.

Unless you have the time, patience and skills to do these kinds of upgrades, I wouldn't recommend doing them. I have an older G4 tower (from 1999), which I upgraded with memory and a hard drive (from an old PC). I use it mostly for database/web development, and don't even try to use it for video. You may be better off getting something a little newer.

My friend, those stats are pretty comparable to an itouch in all honesty. I would recommend going and just flat out buying a new computer, unfortunately the cheapest mac you will find will run quite high, but if you're willing to go with a pc there are lots of options.

Now don't laugh, I'm being quite honest. Walmart is getting a new line of student laptops, and have one for $300 that will be more than enough to do what you want. I'm sure you'd be quite happy with it. Check it out. (currently they only have netbooks, but trust me, give it a month and they'll be there)
