Hello My computer is not booting. I am getting a message saying:

Windows could not start because of the following file missing or corrutp:

\ system32\hal.dll
please re-install a copy of above file.

What are my options? Where can i get bootable cd from? I just have CD drives to my PC.

Thanks

I had that same problem a month or so ago. Just happened randomly one day. I spent hours and hours reformatting and testing on other computers, but still got the same results. I couldn't even boot from the Windows XP CD to get that reinstalled on it. I ended up taking it to a local computer repair store who said the partition index hadn't been initialized. So, something had gotten messed up there somehow. They fixed it for $20. I'm not sure how they did it, though. You might want to find someone techie to take a look at it.

You need the windows cd. Pop it in, and boot to it, you can try running a repair installation. Your other option, is to pull out the hard drive, hook it up as a slave on another computer, use a windows cd, and copy them to that hard drive in the directory it says is missing.

Good luck.

Get a copy of the boot media and follow the instructions for system rescue on the Microsoft web site.

Or ...

Consider this an excellent time to recognize that

your operating system is defective. I recommend replacing

it with one of:

http://fedora.redhat.com

http://www.centos.org

http://www.opensuse.org

http://www.debian.org

http://www.ubuntu.org

http://www.slackware.org

http://www.freebsd.org

http://www.opensolaris.org

Any of these will be more reliable, less susceptible to

viri, uses your hardware more efficiently, and they're

all free.
