Vista is fine now, it's bugs and incompatibilities are fixed. I even like it better than XP. But it is a tad more bloated than XP. If you get a PC with Vista, make sure it has at least 1 GB of RAM, 2 GB if you want to play intense games. Also, go for Vista Home Premium if you can.

Getting a PC with XP now and upgrading to Vista later could be a problem. Most people who complain, saying "Vista sucks" either used it around the time it first came out or installed it on their XP machine with unsupported hardware.

But over both operating systems, I recommend Ubuntu Linux (and it's free, too)

If you end up not liking Vista for some reason, you could easily just download and install ubuntu.

Or if you want to buy a PC with ubuntu preinstalled, check this:

Personally, I would just stick with vista because:

1. Even if it is horrible like people say, the service pack is still coming out next month.

2. Even if it is horrible, direct X10 is rolling out very soon so if you want to play the newest games, you're going to want vista.

3. Xp is officially discontinued by the end of this year (or sooner) so that means you have to spend extra money to buy vista when you could have received it with your new PC.

4. I ran vista for 4 months now and honestly, I have never ran into any problems yet. I've also found that since vista comes on a new laptop and because we are still unfamiliar with 'new' things, we blame vista for everything. When the computer crashes, "oh its vista, vista sucks!". When my mouse wasn't working, "oh, its vista, man vista is so crappy". I didn't realize I was doing this at one point too, but yeah......I think we all did.

5. Like someone else said, keep vista and install XP for now right? Vista is going to be around for another 5 - 10 years so at least you won't have to buy it again.

you should do the other way around that is to take it with vista and then install xp on it so you have the option of two os's. if you agree with me then look at this http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp

hope this helped

XP is like an old friend, solid dependable, anything will run on it and is likely to be the preferred operating system until at least 2012 maybe longer.

Vista is the new kid on the block. I have just reinstalled Vista after a massive disappointment 10 months ago and I am happy to say that there seems to be a marked improvement, it seems more responsive, doesn't crash anymore and the updating facility now works, plus I have now found a piece of software that gives me the 3D cube on Vista !

Vista still has quite a way to go, but is a vast improvement on when it was first released.

So the conclusion I would say, if it comes with Vista then go for it, if you have a choice then go with XP.

Good luck.

LUg.

Edit : As Steve says I would prefer to use Ubuntu 7.04 anyhow : http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.04/

I think you should go for vista. I have been using vista for a year now and apart from some minor complaints regarding it being a memory hog; I find it to be far better than XP.

Let me come directly to the point, we all know that in terms of features vista is better than XP. Your only dilemma is that being a relatively new OS it might have some issues like bugs, incompatibility etc. Your concern is justified but as companies develop newer OSs they subject them to even more stringent tests before releasing them in the market. For example when XP was launched it was launched as it is but before launching Vista Microsoft launch two major pre-release versions (dubbed as RC1 and RC2) to Beta testers in the public. So theoretically speaking the Vista available today is much refined version of an OS had it been launched on the lines of XP. Secondly the vista service pack is due in the first quarter of 2008 and this should lighten your fear regarding vista. Finally vista is going to be the standard OS in the future as XP is now so any investment in XP now would be useless.

But if you plan to use vista make sure you have at least 2GB of ram.

I am using vista for my laptop. Until now I haven't had any serious problem with it.

If you want to use vista, you should read the hardware requirement. Because if your hardware requirement is not match to vista's hardware requirement, it can slow your vista or perhaps could hang your computer.

Some of my friends still like xp with sp2. They said that it is more stable. But my vista still ok and don't have any problem.

So you can choose which one you like.

Well I think you should get XP as so many people ***** how Vista blows and it will also be cheaper. Then wait for the next version to come out and hear peoples reviews.

I would stick with the XP. I have XP and it works with everything.

I have a few friends who have Vista and they always tell me there is some program that wont run with it.

Id wait a year or two to upgrade to Vista.

Get Windows Vista now. The only reason why Vista is a problem is because of it's incompatibility with 3rd part software. If you don't use 3rd party software that much then Windows Vista is the best choice. Unless you rely a lot on 3rd party software then stick to XP.

The only problem is incompatibility. If you know how to use a computer just for office work then Vista will work smoothly without any problem.

get vista ultimate

all the problems on answers are vista home premium

partition your hard drive to better manage your puter

its a chance that xp will be missing drivers for some of the new hardware

you could dual boot

google dual boot xp vista, but i would only do this to run old software, or you wont learn vista.

personally id go with XP, as its easier to use, looks nice, and best of all everything works with it such as programmes. I had Vista before and when i went to play counter-strike (Something i play all the time), it didnt run at all bcos of vista! also vista is very slow eve with 2GB of RAM when compared to XP.

P.s there is a new version of windows, aka windows 7, coming out in 2009, so just use XP until then. W7 is like a good version of vista basically, so everyone will buy it then.

as you have XP working ok, why change is the message be written by alot of people I have heard view this subject besides VISTA is going through teething problems and Service Pack 1 is still not out yet and there is talk about XP SP3 still to come as Vista has not lived up to expectations.

Vista has nothing better then XP at the moment.

Hi, that is good question. Actually it depends on your need. If by using XP there is no problem with you, your job and your application, then why not decide XP.

And if you don’t have any critical application that may not run on vista please consider still using XP. But sometimes new hardware already complies with Vista and also some hardware not run on XP.

I think better you run XP first and my grade latter, it would be wise. Except you make sure that don’t have any critical application running on XP.

likely your going to could desire to format the two NTFS partitions. be sure you back up something and each little thing you do no longer choose to lose on a cd/dvd/ect.. call one Partition Xp, the different Vista. set up Xp First on the Xp partition, after it is finished, take out your Xp cd, put in your Vista dvd, and set up Vista on the Vista Partition. i could provide extra HDD area to the OS your going to be utilising extra frequently.

I would go with XP for now. I used to have Vista, and it used to crash on me a lot. I decided to rollback to XP, and haven't received any of those errors yet. I'm planning to get Vista once Microsoft releases it's first stable service pack update, so I would highly recommend you doing the same.

i recommend getting xp..

why xp:

its been there for a long time, many stuff has been discovered and found, especially bugs.. another is the support for programs. some might not run on vista..

and less system requirements

why not vista:

dont get vista yet... let it be there for a while. wait for it to be fully "supported" by developers. also, there is a possibility of unseen bugs. get it when you feel its "already safe"

requires too much ram

I think you should install Windows XP (if you've license) because Windows Vista still do not stable.

Vista.

No question about it.

If you are even considering the "old" stuff why not '98 or Win2k?

Vista is working very nicely and will only get better.

Now if you want to talk Linux ......................
