1. Try booting in safe mode

2. Try recovery CD and repair

3. Try parallel install

4. Don't try system recovery without data backup

You need to have a bootable CD of WinXp what you do is first on your PC and then make a change in the BIOS settings, you will find the option of first bootable device you change it to CD drive and the second bootable device to harddisk.

Now restart the PC and inset the winXP installation CD in the CD drive of the computer after some time you see whether it displays the option of repairing or not.

I advice you that you do this in presence of some experienced person who can guide you . You can do it on your own but don't take risk if there is important data stored in your computer.

What might have happened is the system files of your computer are corrupted.

Not booting ei? Did you try pressing F8 repeatedly before the normal WinXP booting sequence and going into safe mode? If yes then you can use the System Restore, assuming that you didn't disable it

If that doesn't work, you need to configure your PC to boot from CD-ROM Drive and insert your Windows XP CD installer. After booting from CD, select your current installation and press (R) to perform repair Windows XP.

Yes, If you have System Restore on you can set your PC to roll back to the date and time that you wish.

Another way is by restarting your PC and rapidly tapping F10, This will activate your Windows Recovery System, You can choose to either do an Advance Recover (Deletes every file and starts from scratch), Or just do the normal recovery (Restores all original files and also keeps your files saved).
