I am attempting to create a new partition to install xp so i can transfer my data from the existing partition to the new partition and delete the existing one due to an unstable system. to be honest i have never performed one before and need some help. i have however created partitions on unpartitioned space before. unfortunately, i deleted the unpartitioned space to expand the one existing for maximum data. could someone give me detailed steps on how to create a new partition to install the new system then transfer data and delete the new partition then expand it to full. thanks to anyone who can help.

You will need to get a program like Partition Magic to create a partition on an active partition. I think Acronis True Image will do that also.

Good luck

Probably you may try the following clean solution :

1. Take a snapshot of programs, settings and files using one of PC migration tools.

2. Make a clean installation of XP on the whole disk space.

3. Recovery a snapshot on a new image.

The solution takes only personal part of your PC. That personal part can be recreated on any PC running the same or even higher version of an operating system . You may store it for upgrading to Windows 7.

I am familiar with 4 tools that are able to do transfer existing program, settings and file transfer

* PCMover - transfers about 250 programs, settings and files, about $50.

* Windows 7 Migration - transfers about 30 programs, settings and files, about $25

* Windows Easy Transfer - transfers operating system and program settings and files only, but free.

* PickMeApp - transfers about a million programs only, but free.

If the data is not much in size copy them to USB or to external hard drive if you have.

then run win xp setup after loading the setup files it will give you the option to delete the partitions and create new.

If you don't have any external storage to backup your data. Use any third party tool to repartition the harddisk withour loosing the data. Tools like Partition Magic etc.
