I just got a new(er) tower, it already has an 80 gig hd in it running XP. My current pc has a 60 G western digital..I would like to fdisk/format my 60 gig and install it into the new tower just to use for storage. Possable? Do I need to install an operating system on the second HD, or will XP guide me with what i need to do? I am not looking for a mirror image (RAID) just 60G of additional storage, using the 80G for every day net, word processing, and the second drive to store photos etc....sort of a master and slave.

First you have to format your 60GB hard drive. Do it on the tower it's on. Then you open up the tower, take it out, then put it in the new tower. After that, your good to go. Just go into My Computer and see if it's there. Oh, make sure you have the second hard drive as the slave. There should be a connector from the systems 1st hard drive.

Windows well help you decide on what to do with your hard drive when you format. Just install XP on one, but make sure you have the jumper config correct for Master and Slave on the hard drives. Your BIOS will automatically load from the hard drive with the OS on it and your other extra HD will show up in Windows to put videos, music, or whatever else on it.

Yes, you can have 2 hard disks drives in 1 system. You only need 1 operating system. You don't even need to format the 60 GB drive if it has a FAT32 or NTFS filesystem on it. Just make sure the drive is set to "cable select", plug it in, power on and thats it!
