Post the brand, model number, operating system of the computer when asking for help.

You can use Windows to format and partition the hard drive.

Do you have the operating system recovery / install disc set for the computer ?

When you use the recovery / install disc set it formats the hard drive during the process of reinstalling the operating system which is not the same as using the built in recovery partition.

Follow the steeps given below: If your secondary hard drive is not already connected, connect it. The secondary hard drive needs to be connected before and throughout the duration of the installation. The computer needs to recognize the hard drive for the following steps to work. Step 2You will need the Windows 7 CD. Insert the CD and the installation screen should automatically come up. Start the installation. During the installation you will be asked where you want to install the operating system. Choose your secondary hard drive. Remember you won't be able to select it if you don't have it hooked up. Step 3This creates a dual boot with Windows 7 as your primary boot. During the installation you will also be asked which operating system you want to run when the computer restarts. If you do change anything, Windows 7 will boot.

Never heard of a slow format of the drive. But I do know that you can change how 7 installs. You can delete all the date, and the current format under the 7 install options, but beware this DELETES EVERYTHING FOREVER!!! Then when installing, format the drive in NTFS and continue the install. If your problems persist, you might need a new hard drive. Hope I helped

First Check the "health" status of your hard drive with HDTUNE free trial. if there are errors buy a new hard drive in re install windows. slow format will not make any difference.

Check your RAM with a memory testing utility like memtest86 or with the windows 7 tool http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/715-memory-diagnostics-tool.html if there are errors find the bad memory stick and replace.

If you can do a full system restore to factory defaults try that first but back up your document folder first.
