Is there any computer that comes close to a Sony computer?

Question

I want to get a good computer but my dad only wants me to get a Sony.
he told me all the other computer manufactures suck.
My dad only buys Sony products.
He said if it wasn't for Sony there would be no computers.
I told him I wanted to check around but dad yelled at me and said no other computer can match a Sony for speed and performance.
Dad will not talk to me if I buy a different manufacturer.
Is Sony really the best?
Are there no companies who can measure up to Sony?

The only thing that makes a Sony better than a similarly-equipped computer from say... Toshiba is the fact that there is a shiny "Sony" logo on the computer.



I have been repairing all brands of computers for going on 9 years now. While Sony may be one of the first to include some of the newer technologies in their PC's, they also charge a premium just for the name.



If your dad is buying it for you, let him pay the extra cash for the Sony. It will make him feel better in the long run.



If it is you that is paying for it, with your hard earned money, then go for something like an HP or a Toshiba and tell your dad to stuff it. They are just as good, and are much cheaper.



Just make sure you research your purchase before you make it. There are plenty of sites that have customer reviews on it, and that is VERY useful information.

Sony is adequate, borderline overpriced, bloated with software that you don't need, and inflexible as far as the hardware options (extra memory, video cards, etc.) that you can get. They are an OK computer to buy on sale if you aren't too particular about what you get and if you know how to clean the bloatware off of them to make them run more efficiently. There's no reason that i can think of why anybody would be able to say that Sony is any better than Dell, HP, or Gateway. The custom builds are usually the best because of price and flexibility, if you go to a shop that knows what they are doing.



Oh, regarding the guy talking about Mac . . . they're every bit as buggy and imperfect as Windows machines, no matter how pushy their followers are or how cute their commercials are:-) Macintosh tries so hard to be a credible player in the modern desktop market space, and, aside from a small niche, they still aren't. Plus, they're more expensive and you will find a great many software packages that just aren't made for the Mac.

Just to throw in my 2 cents, I disagree that no one can match a Sony in speed and performance. If Dell uses the same Core 2 Duo processor and the same video card as a Sony computer, I bet they will be equally fast.



For me the issue here is durability. And a good example to look at is what medium to large size corporations use. Computers take a beating in corporate use. And you would generally see IBM (Lenovo), Dell and Compaq in the office environment.



Now Sony has definitely raised the bar in the past in other electronic areas, but not in the PC world. Plus, they are kinda pricey compared to other manufacturers with the same specs.



That said, unless it was a really good price, I would stay away from Sony computers. But hey, your not flipping the bill, so a free Sony computer is better than getting disowned.

IMO, I would never buy a Sony computer. They use too many proprietary parts which makes them expensive to fix or upgrade. Plus, they are expensive!



Sony cannot be credited for the existence of computers. In terms of mass market, IBM, Apple, Dell and Gateway led the way...especially in terms of getting computers into the hands of everyday people.



Sony is an electronics company that makes many devices. I say stick with a manufacturer that specializes in computers. Dell comes to mind because they make fast computers that are inexpensive. Some might argue that Dell support sucks...but how could that be any better than Sony support? In terms of customer experience, for me Apple can't be beat...I've had excellent support from them.



Sony is far from the best. Shop around and you'll find better computers for you money.

Perhaps you should explain to your father that these computers are all relatively comparable.



The chipset is going to be made by Intel, Nvidia, AMD, etc.

This is a fact - it's all the same chipset manufacturers regardless of who puts their sticker on the box.



The processor is going to be made by AMD or Intel.

Again - a fact



The RAM - same thing - about 10 different RAM chip manufactruers.



The Video card - it's going to be NVidia or ATi most likely if not an integrated Intel card. These components aren't sony - they are another manufacturer.



Are you talking about a laptop - because alot of Sonys actually use LG (panasonic) display panels...



The CD drive will probably be made by Sony - but not necessarily. The Hard drive for certain won't be - as Sony doesnt' make hard drives.



Neither will the modem, the network card, the USB controller, nor probably the motherboard tying them all together.



The only way to get the absolute highest quality PC and components.is to build it yourself and hand pick the best available hard disk, optical drive, power supply, RAM, etc. etc. etc.



You're paying for the pretty sony box and gadgetry - but the guts are all basically the same on any of them - with not anything but the optical drives being exclusively "Sony"

If your dad's paying for it get the Sony. They are really nice. They are also very spendy. You can have a local builder build you a computer that will kick a Sony's butt for less. Sony uses the same parts as anyone else and, contrary, to what your dad thinks, there are no mystical powers in a Sony. My first computer was a Sony and when I had a problem with it Sony support had no clue whatsoever so I ended up fixing the problem myself. Now I build sell and repair them for a living LOL. I guess I can thank sony for that.

He is biased and you guys should do some serious research together and get facts. Any custom built system will be better then a bundled Sony, so you don't have to buy a popular name like HP, Gateway, Compaq, etc.



Tell your dad to open his mind and look around and stop praising Sony so much. They aren't the best, but they aren't the worst either.

Sony is average quality when it comes to computers, they are overpriced because of the company's name-brand recognition from audio & video such as TVs,VCRs and DVD players- where their quality very high- but that doesn't carry over into computers.



Sony computers use proprietary parts which make them a bigger hassle to fix. Many other brands like Dell, Toshiba, IBM and HP are better buys.



Just because BMW makes good cars and is your favorite car company, doesn't mean they make good cameras.

If you want to buy quality and reliability... get a mac. There is NO operating system better than Apple's OS X being sold for desktops or laptops today. Anything running windows will get trashed by viruses and trojans, and even by itself in a few months.



Of course if you had computer smarts you'd get a windows type computer, ditch windows and install linux. But you'd still have the supposed windows hardware issue that your Dad is concerned about.



No.. go buy a mac if you want everything will work properly, ALL the time.

They are a highly trusted Organization
