I found an old Packard-Bell desktop computer that's in mint condition. The only thing is that it has no operating system. Since I have an installation disc for Windows XP, I figured I could install XP using the disc. But I'm afraid the computer hardware will not be able to recognize or understand the OS disc since XP was created later than the desktop computer. Is there something i can do?

How old is the computer? How much RAM does it have, and how big is the hard drive?

I installed Windows XP on Pentium 2 machines with no problems so you should try to install the OS on the machine but make sure the PC has at least 64MB of RAM and a 4GB HDD.

I installed Windows XP (and tweaked after installed it...) on a P2 (300MHz),128MB of RAM,4GB HDD,2MB video card and a simple CD-ROM drive with no problems.

You should definitely try to install Windows XP on the machine...if it hasn't even got another older operating system installed...why not try with Windows XP?

One IMPORTANT THING:When you want someone to help you , you give ALL the DETAILS, in your case THE PC'S SPECIFICATIONS.

For me... an Intel Pentium 4 is an old processor...so by using the word ' old ' different people understand different things.

Of course the really old machine is a P1,P2,P3...but what about a 486?..:))...

We can never give you the a really really good answer unless you give us some more details about your PC.

Processor type and frequency?(I suppose it's at least a Pentium)

Amount of installed memory?(I suppose it's SDRAM)

Hard Drive capacity?

Additional details are always welcome(if you can provide us with something like this):

No. even as your processor is peppy sufficient, there are different issues incorrect which includes your gadget that can make playing this interest complicated: a million. you do not have sufficient gadget RAM. 1GB isn't even sufficient to suitable run Vista with out pulling your hair out. 2GB is minimum, and four GB is cautioned. 2. ATI Mobility chipset pics. this isn't a pics gadget meant for efficient interest rendering, and also lacks sufficient video memory. you may run Microsoft note like a champ, yet no longer The Sims 3. the coolest information is that you've a measurement, and under no circumstances a operating laptop or computer. improve your video card to a extra recent ATI Radeon sequence with a minimum of 512MB of video RAM 3. The more recent video playing cards have 2 caveats you have to be conscious of: they are higher, and your case should be bodily waiting to carry one contained in the PCIX slot and performance sufficient capacity cables/furnish to run it. in the adventure that your gadget has the inventory Dell powersupply, i'd wager that a extra recent card ought to stretch it truly is limits. verify the gadget criteria of ANY card you purchase for capacity criteria and dimensions. 4. no longer a call for, yet deploy Vista SP2. EDIT: The Sims 2 compatibility - products #a million and #4 above are nevertheless real. variety #2 could nevertheless be real - verify the region I presented for interest compatibility for that video gadget.

I would be more worried that the hardware is too old to run XP properly. XP will work as long as the system has enough resourses
