I have an old computer I just played Sims 2 on until a power cut killed it and I had to reinstall the OS. Now I get yellow questionmarks by USB, Video Controller and Vid. Cont. (VGA Compatible) I have tried installing the drivers disk I got with the computer, but it can't seem to find the driver I need for my video card. Directx 9.0 C comes with the game and my drivers disk has Geforce 2, 3 and 4, amongst others. I don't know the video card. I have looked in the device manager and it doesn't seem to have a device installed even though I've tried! My Computer is a Tiny with AMD Athlon Processor. It's about 7-9 years old. That's all I know about it. It used to play the Sims, so I must ahve all the hardware and software I need! It's not connected to the internet and won't be. Real working solutions only please. I don't want to hear from anyone telling me to take it to a technician. Sorry but I've been trying to fix this for 4 days now. Would reainstalling XP work? How would I do that?

You need to identify the video card which will lead you to the correct drivers.

Google "Belarc". It's a utility to tell you what is in your PC.

You don't have the right drivers. Reinstalling XP won't fix that. You're going to have to get the drivers, preferably from the maker's web site. The only fix is getting drivers. You can try each of the drivers on your disk until you get one that works. If you've installed Vista, that's probably 90% of your problem and in that case, rolling back to XP will help since the drivers on your disk will likely work for XP.

Honestly, if it's 7-9 years old, it's time for a new machine.

Reinstalling XP will only work if XP recognised the devices before without you having to use an installation disk.

If you still have the disks that came with the devices, use those.

Try the generic driver sites, they seem to have most drivers for most things. I've listed a few below, but you can Google more.

Go into Device Manager and try uninstalling the items that have the yellow question mark. Then shut down your computer and reeboot it.

With luck, the plug & play will see the hardware and try to reinstall the drivers.

If it can't find them then you will need to get hold of them through the computer manufacturer... sometimes their websites have download pages for their drivers.... Good luck.

Its possible that the power spike that caused you to have to reinstall the OS damaged the video card.

Since you obviously have access to the internet download updated drivers from nvidia. They make Geforce cards. Burn the driver to a cd and then install it.

How are you running XP on a computer that is 7+ years old?

you don't have to buy new computer. :)

USB -maybe u havent installed yet your webcam, printer, scanner etc..

Video Controller - Geforce is a brand for video card, maybe u should try ur drivers for 2, 3 and 4. assuming you got Geforce as ur video card.

try the update driver on device manager. :)

You're going to have to open it up and find the video card. Identify it and then go online to find the right driver. your current one is apparently corrupted. Good luck. I lost my sound card capability that way and still can't seem to find the right driver. But then, I gave up after awhile.

Reinstalling X won't solve your driver problems. Try going to pc pitstop and running their "driver alert" program to see what drivers you need.
