Hello Perry S:
There are two possible reasons for your Desktop Icons to be missing from the Windows XP desktop and each requires you to check
(or reset) the appropriate option to make them appear.
The 1st step would be to check that the necessary icons are set to be visible on the desktop which you can do by following the path outlined below:
a) Right-click an empty spot on your desktop >> Hover your mouse cursor over the Arrange Icons By menu listing >> Click the Show Desktop Icons listing so that a checkmark appears next to it
(Be advised that the 2 previous answers refer to the "View" option, but that is available in Windows Vista and is not an option in XP).
The 2nd possibility would be that the icons were never apparent on the desktop because they were never selected for inclusion in XP's advanced properties menu. To check that possibility (if the 1st step doesn't solve the issue) follow this path:
b) Right-click an empty spot on your desktop >> Select the Properties option >> Select the Desktop tab >> next select the Customize Desktop button near the bottom of the window >> now on the General tab you will see either 3 or 4 checkboxes for some Windows appropriate icons which you will select to make visible >> lastly click the OK button.
I hope this has been of some help.
