I am going to college this upcoming fall. My parents want to buy me a new laptop (my old one is getting crappy), so I want one that is good enough for my last year in high school till end of college. I'm going for eletrical engineering or computer science/ business major

Can you name some good PC laptops that is under 1K that is good for college students?

or should I buy a Macbook pro or air instead?

Thanks!

This: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834131309

Has an SSD and the new Ivy Bridge (3rd Gen) CPU. It's pretty fast.

If you want more space and are okay with sacrificing a lot of performance, you could also go with this:

But at least for me if it's a PC for college, and it's not a gaming machine or anything it's not like you're going to be putting a lot of stuff on it anyway. If you're going to be writing down notes for lectures and stuff it might be a good idea to go with the first as well because it has an SSD instead of a hard drive which are MUCH faster, so you don't have to wait a minute for it to boot, the first one should boot in like 10 seconds.

Lol you wont be getting a Mac book for under a grand if money is not a problem in deciding get a Mac if weight is not an issue with the Macs get a Mac book pro.

But if money is an issue or you value money get a PC.

My favorite laptops for the price is the Toshiba satellite line. Stay away from hp. ASUS makes a good laptop. but don't just follow my opinions go to best buy and see what you like and why.

Get a Macbook Pro, not the air.

I don't know of any PC's that will last you through 4 years of college without slowing down, breaking down, or getting a virus.

ok, If he's merely going to apply it for surfing the internet and writing up papers, etc.. Get a netbook they are ideal ideal for this and intensely portable to boot through fact the main low priced. If he's going to be doing any variety of heavy video modifying form training he could actually get a mac even however computing device additionally has great utility. yet mac is premiere in this section. If he needs a computer replace bypass with the computing device they are very great around 20"+ displays and have comparable overall performance to a computer. they are intense potential yet no longer very portable through fact they eat the battery particularly speedy. a professional for a dorm rather of an extremely laptop through fact it does not take in area plus you ought to shelter it. i've got commonplace of acquaintances who've had roommates stealing issues from them. And, of course the premiere drawl for computing device is by using the fact a mac with a similar overall performance/specs is quadruple the cost. manufacturers i prefer to recommend for computing device may well be Samsung, Asus or Dell(final decision). Oh yeah I strongly recommend getting a matte visual reveal unit through fact tender displays are very almost impossible to ensure exterior.

Bottom line is. Do you need to run Apple only software? Then get a Mac. If not, don't because they're a complete ripoff for the hardware you get

mac definitely. The ease of use is unparalleled and as an engineering major you need your computer to be as stable as possible. Microsoft hasnt made a stable kernel since XP.
