Safe mode does NOT load the high-level drivers for everything you run on your PC, i.e. USB drives, sound cards, video drivers, etc. The fact that it runs "great" in safe mode makes me believe you have a conflict between 2 or more drivers, or a hardware conflict.

WHAT did you do just prior to the beginning of the boot problem. Did you install any new software or hardware, or did you change any settings? That may be the cause of the problem and would be something I would remove or change back before doing anything else.

The next step to diagnose your problem would be to physically remove all the extra PCI cards from you computer. Just leave the video card installed. Then start your computer and see if it will boot normally.

If it does boot normally, replace 1 card at a time and reboot your computer after each card is installed (Windows will automatically reinstall the driver). When you install the card that is causing the problem your machine will fail to boot properly and you will know which driver is at fault. You may need to update the problem driver at this point.

Without knowing the specs on you machine or what, if any, error messages you may be receiving this is the best advice I can provide.

It is very simple that some of the system or booting files are missing so i request you please to insert CD into your CD Rom and then try to repair your computer. But before performing this make sure that you have Windows XP SP 3 Disk pr not since here only XP SP 3 will work since XP SP 3 is already installed on your computer so XP SP 2 wouldn't work on XP SP3. run in safemode with network

run onecare below to fix the registry

Do all this

Clean Up Computer

===============

Download and run superantispyware. I was put onto this program because of an annoying popup (XP or Vista plus all OS preceding)

http://www.superantispyware.com

Superantispyware is a good program and remember to update it before scanning. A scan may take 45mins.

afterwards clean up the registry with this

Clean up pc and IE

==============

To clean up run this Microsoft’s windows live program. It does registry, spyware , virus , disk clean up and defrag

It takes 2 hours or more so once it starts to load x file of x you can leave the computer and go to bed etc.

XP Users http://onecare.live.com/site/en-ca/defau...

Vista Users http://onecare.live.com/site/en-ca/cente...

Run the full scanner, then at the end of the scan it asks you to set it running full time.

Think twice about setting it to run in the background as it could be another thing to slow you down. However, it may be worth while if you have no other security programs running.

Consider the following options:

I personally run Norton 360 which is full internet security and run superantispyware when I want to.

So if you don’t have a decent internet security program then perhaps run the superantispyware with your antivirus in the background.

If you sick of antivirus programs that don’t work perhaps run onecare full time and run superantispyware whenever.

Now you should be flying and Onecare has even set up a new system restore point for you.

edit:

you can try this in safe mode

XP – system file checker

====================

System File Checker (SFC). This can also be run in Safe Mode should you prefer.

To run SFC, close all applications such as Office, Messenger, Email, etc, and go to:

- Start

- Run

- Type in sfc /scannow (include the space before the " / ")

What SFC does is that it attempts to fix or replace critical operating system files. Sometimes this can be done without the installation disk; however it may prompt you for the appropriate operating system installation disk. If that is the case, then you know that you definitely have major file corruption or something missing. Insert the disk if prompted. Also you should run SFC using the Administrator account.

IF you have antivirus, run it in safe mode and see what happens. I would avoid reinstalling XP because you will LOSE ALL OF YOUR DOCUMENTS, PICTURES, MUSIC, ETC. if you do not back them up.

Wait until all other avenues have been exhausted before reinstalling. Let us try to help before you reinstall!!!

I agree with the other pro that answered, except that you may have installed some other equipment..a printer, sound card, etc, that is incompatible and forces safe mode.

I am a Microsoft Certified professional and recommend "the other guy"..Linux. www.mintlinux.com will get you a better operating system for free.

You (or someone else) has changed a setting in Windows. Since you don't have the slightest idea what has been changed, the easiest way to be able to use "real" Windows again would be to reinstall Windows.

Start it in safe mode, and re-install all the drivers for your hardware. Or, if that doesn't work, just re-install the operating system.

the best way without any headaches is to do a repair installation, boot through your xp cd, and choose R repair installation.

ps: to all "pros" you can install windows without losing any single bit of data, its called "repair installation" however, by trying to "guide" this user at fixing his own operating system you are most likely only going to make the problem worse, so please, spare us.
