One way to pickk up speed is by adding more ram. My comp was doing the same thing so I got the specs on my machine and found that it maxes out at 2gb of ram. I simply ordered up 2gb and installed it. That was a huge boost. Other things to check: Is your hard drive getting full? Allowing your drive to be at more than 50% capacity WILL slow things to a crawl. The fuller it gets, the slower things will become. If it's full of songs or videos, consider burning them to cd's or dvd's to free things up. Also consider doing a disk defrag. If it has been over a month since you last defragged your hard drive, things will slow down as well. If you are running windows, there are tools in there that can perform this for you. There are others available on the web. I hope that helps!

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

Firstly, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser

2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".

3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.

4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.

5. Click OK.

3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:

1. Open your Start menu.

2. Click Run

3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"

4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab

5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.

6. Click "OK"

Other great tip is increasing your virtual memory to simulate more RAM. This will give you a bit more resources for multiple program use or CPU heavy programs. Check the link to alter your virtual memory spec.

Hope this link helps. Shows you how to do everything step by step. You should get a least 60-120% more resources and speed

if you follow the tips.

Follow these steps to do computer maintenance.

- run Disk Cleanup - from the System Tools section of Accessories

- Open My Computer, then Right Click on your C drive and pick PROPERTIES. Pick the Tools section and click on CHECK NOW. Check both tests, and YES, let it run after you restart. You see, CHECK DISK will ensure that your hard drive is working completely. This test might take an hour or so.

- run DEFRAG - from the System Tools section of Accessories.

Keep your anti-virus solution up to date, and run a full scan weekly.

Keep your anti-spyware solution up to date, and run a full scan every few days. I recommend the free SpyBot Search & Destroy that you can get from http://www.download.com

Do all of this regularly, and your computer will run better.

With Windows XP, you should have more RAM. 256MB is no longer enough, with the updates and anti-virus definitions that you have. Check your system with the free SCAN TOOL at Crucial.com

1.Defrag your hard drive. your hard disk may be big enough but if files are fragmented, it takes quite a bit of time for the computer to compile the fragmented data. For this open my computer and right click on each of the partitions and select defrag.

2. Put all programmes - especially programmes like photoshop which take up a lot of disk space for running -other than the operating system and office on another drive. Let the root drive be for the exclusive use of operating system.

3. 256 MB RAM is good enough but you have to periodically free memory by saving your work. In this way you send the data to hard disk and free RAM.

When your computer comes from the factory with it's default settings, it has been optimized to run properly. Over time, as you add files and software - and just as importantly, remove files and software - your computer gets farther and farther away from it's optimal settings. To put this in perspective, it would be like adding parts to your car, and then removing some other parts and then adding more parts after that. Finally, your car doesn't run very well anymore.

More specifically, there are several primary areas that could be causing your computer to run slow. The most likely reason is that your registry has become corrupt and your system is essentially running in circles with its internal processing.

The second most common problem is that you have too many programs running behind the scenes. In this case, we're not talking about the programs you know about that are running at the bottom of your task bar, such as Outlook Express or your internet browser window. But behind the scenes, there can be literally hundreds of programs of various sizes running in the background. These are eating up your computer's available processing capacity and can bring your system to a literal stand still.

To determine if your system is in fact running slow because of problems in your registry, you will need to run a self diagnostic program such as Registry Patrol. This easy to use program will perform a deep scan on your computer and will report back on any issues or problems it finds for you at no charge - which means you can figure out what is wrong without having to buy anything in advance or pay a technician to essentially perform the same function.

Programs such as Registry Patrol work by scanning all of your files and hard drives and then creates a cue report of any problems if finds. It's not uncommon to find out that your computer has literally hundreds of irregular settings and errors - in fact when we did a test of the program on a computer in our office, it found 916 errors on the initial trial scan.

The main advantage of using a registry repair program is it will instantly fix the majority of the problems that are slowing down your computer quickly and safely - and is a whole lot cheaper than having a technician look at your computer. It also has a feature that allows you to stop programs from loading when you turn on your computer which is often a problem for older systems with too many start up applications trying to get started every time you boot your machine up. In addition, Registry Patrol will also clean what is called your cache files which will dramatically speed up your internet performance.

For those of you running the Windows XP system, you might also want to consider the XP Medic program which offers several more advanced features than the Registry Patrol application, including the ability to completely optimize your entire XP operating system.

Registry Patrol and XP Medic are both free to install and operate and will likely solve many of the slow processing problems your computer may be experiencing.

Increase your RAM size to approx. 1GB. Clean all unwanted registry entries , dead short-cuts, non related links defragment your hard drive and registry too. Use any of antivirus programme to remove any virus dialer or trojan or any adware that might be present hiddenly on your computer and making it go slow.Scan your hard disk for any bad sector and get repaired it. also make your partition NTFS and stop down the indexing service alongwith system restoring for unwanted unecessary partitions. It will work out

You may be having a virus or spyware installed on your PC. Norton, AVG , Avast are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html

you have to know that the proble began from your memory.

so, no other way.

just upgrade your memory(ram).

256MB is not enough to run program that are ussual used now.

i recommend you to upgrade you ram to 1GB for better performance, or higher capacity if you have good budget too..
