This is a simple procedure that you could certainly do yourself. Normally, nust knowing the manufactured and model is enough to research the type of memory you need. Upgrading is simple and easy too. Once you have the new memory, you can locate the existing memory by looking for something that looks like what you are holding.
I urge you not to do this yourself. I suggest you find a friend or neightbor who can help walk you through the procedure. While the task is pretty simple, a lot can go wrong and render you computer unable to start. If you do not have friends or neighbors, do your research on the web before try begin.
Of course, you can go so a local computer place and have them help for a fee.

It's pretty simple. All you need to do is locate the RAM (http://computermemoryupgrade.mysuperpc.com/circled_motherboard.jpg), pop aside the two tabs on the side, an lift it out. To insert memory, its basically just reverse the process. Just align the grove on the stick of memory with the one in the slot, and push down. The tabs on the side will close automatically. However, if you don't want to open your computer to check, just go to http://www.crucial.com/index.aspx?gclid=cmo8yfopv5acfqmsfqod_vsnvw and click "scan my system". Good luck!

1) Ground yourself - any static can fry your computer memory
2) Power off the pc of course
3) open box, and look for a slot of memory on the motherboard - motherboard is parallel to the case, and memory is perpendicular to it.
4) Press buttons on both sides of memory to unlock and lift memory.

No, the best way is to consult your motherboard manual. If you haven't the manual go to your motherbaord's manufacturer's website or the website of your computer manufacturer.
When replacing RAM it is always best to consult the motherboard manufacturer's specifications.
Your motherboard manual (download it if necessary) will have a diagtam of your motherboard showing the position and giving details of precisely how to remove and replace RAM modules.
