I found that it's best to have windows set to manage virtual memory, and defragment at least once a week to keep free space on the hard drive. = ( "system managed size"). To change it: computer/propertes/advanced/performance/advanced/at the bottom change it.

Also it is possible that you could use more ram. How much ram do you have?

Test your ram with these: = Memtest86+ here: http://www.memtest.org

You can change virtual memory settings as indicated by others but, normally, it is better to let Windows handle it automatically. With the latter, you would get an error message if there was insufficient disk space for expansion.

The maximum virtual memory that can be used by a single application is 2 GB but it is possible that a not enough memory error can occur when much less than this is demanded. I have a program that demonstrates the error via WinXP when less than 1.5 GB is requested. As far as an application is concerned, it has access to 2 GB of contiguous address space, the space being allocated in a table and cannot be changed. If the application keeps allocating then freeing varying amounts of memory, the table can become fragmented and contiguous space might not be available for a request for a large amount of memory.

My program works via Win98 and Win2K but WinXP pinches a little more of the user memory space and a 512 MB slot cannot be found.

OK. Follow these steps, and I'll try to be as accurate as possible.

Click START.

Go into CONTROL PANEL.

Go into PERFORMANCE & MAINTENACE or if straight into the screen where all options are listed, then you want to go into SYSTEM.

Or, heres a shortcut for you. Press the Windows Key & Pause / Break at the same time. (This will do the same thing)

From there select the ADVANCED tab.

Then select SETTINGS in the Performance category.

Click into ADVANCED.

And at the bottom click into CHANGE, in the virual memory category.

From there change the setting to CUSTOM SIZE, and enter two values. What you want the virtual memory to be all the time, and then the max virtual memory in times of increased memory activity.

This function will increase your speed, by portioning the selected amount of your hard drive and using it as RAM. Quite clever really.

However, the best way of speeding up your computer is by buying some extra RAM. This will increase your performance much more noticabley.

GOOD LUCK!!!

"Virtual memory" is just a term meaning the amount of memory that is available to windows applications after the system and any other processes that are running have taken their portion of memory. The best way to allocate more virtual memory is to increase the amount of physical RAM loaded in your system, of course, but there are more immediate things you can do to help alleviate the problem.

Any applications that are running in the background that aren't needed can be closed out, and even uninstalled if you don't really need them. Doing this will free up some RAM to the system, and might give you enough working space to run whatever it is that you're trying to run.

Well, you didn't say what operating system you are using, so all I can do is give you a generic answer. Right-click MY COMPUTER and select PROPERTIES. When you see the dialog, select ADVANCED tab. Then select the PERFORMANCE tab. Then select the ADVANCED tab. Now, go to Virtual Memory and change whatever you want.
