Go download a program like Prime95 and see how many threads it makes - if it only makes 2 workers, then your CPU might be defective (and should have been called an i3). If that's the case you can return it. It could also be "power saving" settings (prim95 will show FOUR workers if this is the case) or disabled cores in the BIOS. Your motherboard might also have a BIOS update on the manufacturer's website. Oh yeah, and don't run Prime95 for too long!

EDIT: i5 should only have 4 cores, so you should only see 4 boxes in task manager, if that's the case nothing is wrong...but if you only have 2...then do as listed above. Windows stupidly shows "threads" as cores, but you should know that each core can only handle 1 thread (unless you have an i7) , and you have 4 cores, so 4 cores x 1 thread/ 1 core = 4 threads. You should see FOUR boxes only.

before we go any further I would like to know what

Motherboard you have... make sure its LGA 1155 as that is the only thing that can go with the 3750...

if that is correct continue to the steps below

1. go get CPU-Z and open it

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

2. CHECK THE NAME OF THE PROCESSOR IN CPU-Z

if it says i5 3570, then

check the bios to see if the cores are disable.. OR just CLEAR THE CMOS (some button on the motherboard.

go back into windows and check it again... if it still says two cores (aka ONLY TWO PROCESS WINDOWS !! in task manager under cpu usage history!!)

3. Return it to the store

if it has 4 cpu usage history windows...

like this

http://i.stack.imgur.com/qLvhJ.png

nothing is wrong.. .continue as you were ...

Now we are ready to speak about RETURNING it to the store...

if you take it out and see pins bent under the cpu, You will HAVE TO REPLACE the motherboard... few people can bend them perfectly back into shape... you can try. but dont cry when the cpu dies...as a result... so its best to get a new one..

if the pins look fine.. go to the store and replace the cpu...

if you didnt buy it from a store... you might have been duped.... somebody pulled them wools over ur eyes.. live and learn i guess...
