who wins? i have been using ati for a very long Time but i have not owned a single ati card that didn't give My problems of some kind. i also tried an nvidia card in My system once and it wouldn't work at all. all the colors were messed up all pink and blues and very pixelated. i returned the card to the store. so even with the problems i was having with all My ati cards the one nvidia card i tried was even worse. it would seem as if they all suck. with the ati cards that i do have. My 128 mb card with ddr2 runs faster and performs better than My 512mb with ddr3 what since dose that make? i can run flight simulator x and that 128 no problem runs smooth i just cant turn on lots of scenery in the game. My 512 card cant keep up with My 128. i don't understand that. they are both ati diamond radeon cards. one is an older 9250 and the other is a newer x1650 HD the x1650 has wwdm and dx11 support. the 0250 is dx9 only. why the heck dose the old 128 Mb dx9 card with no avivo technology perform better? i don't get it. but anyways i am getting off topic. it has been a few years since i even kept up with either company. who would offer teh best gpu at this point? i know its a never ending battle. but i want compatibility and performance More than anything else. so who makes The best gpu's? doesn't even have to be ati and nvidia they are just the two major players that i know of the most. what would you recommend?

Both brand names have issues unique to each card. I can't say for sure which brand is better. Certainly ATi Radeon Cards are getting a lot of attention now because of CrossFire which, on certain boards can allow up to 4 Video Cards...

However, I will say this, on a lot of older games, both have had issues. I've been trying to remember whether or not the stuttering issue I have been having on Sim City 4 was there before I did a fresh install of Windows XP and popped in an ATi HD3450 as an upgrade to an Nvidia GF7200. I have both the 7200 and a 7300 sitting to the side so when I feel like finding out, I can swap the ATi Card out...

However I will say this on the X1000 series ATi Cards. Certain Games (Like Sims 2) were having issues with those. Sadly the same is true for many newer cards and older games.

Of course, with NVidia you get tech that ATi doesn't have but eh... They're the only two players on the field worth watching right now just like AMD vs Intel in the CPU arena...

You don't seem to know all that much about computers... What Games are you trying to play anyway...

Edit: I got your message. However, the way you talk... Well, that is why I say it doesn't seem like you know a whole heck of a lot and with you coming off of the Mac bandwagon... Well, ya know...

Anyway, like I said, there have been driver issues, especially with the most recent ATi drivers as well as the ATi X1000 series cards. Yeah it may be newer than the 9250 (which I have also owned and gave to a family member when I'd upgraded) but it had some issues that the 9250 didn't. Now as to why you're asking about this here when you probably should be on a tech or gaming forum asking since you apparently know a lot more than it seems like you know.

At the same time, I'm still perplexed. You probably shouldn't even be running those game on either of those cards. Unless of course you've got the specifics of the cards wrong... Like I said, it's hard to understand what you mean... What versions of the Cards do you have? If my memory serves me correctly the 9250 was primarily an AGP 8x card, but the X1000 series came out when PCIe was first catching on so there are both AGP and PCIe versions... Have you tested this on multiple system configurations?

ATI and nVidia are now the ONLY players at high end graphics. Others may dabble at mainstream integrated chips, but the top end is a two company race.

The X1650 should easily trounce a 9250 in any game. If it doesn't, the first thing I suspect is a driver conflict. Video card drivers are notorious for not uninstalling cleanly. Your new driver for the x1650 may have picked up some old 9250 code and cause problems because of that.

Currently, ATI and nVidia are running very closely in performance and price. nVidia has been able to get more game publishers to put in optimizations for nVidia cards, giving nVidia cards a slight edge in performance on some games. The equivalent ATI cards tend to require significantly less electric power to do nearly the same task.

X1650 supports directx 9

i can comfortably tell you from everything you have told us that you shouldnt mess around with the insides of your computer as you litrally have no idea what your doing.

im going to go with the pink lines etc came up because your power supply didnt meet the requirements. and your more powerful 512mb card being worse because you dont understand how drivers work and you didnt full uninstall the old drivers and install the new ones.

since catalyst control centre 10.0 neither the ATi nor nvidea cards should give you any trouble unless your doing something wrong, they are both fairly similar.

Get an Xbox 360 it has a super determination of video games, and an exceptional on line ability yeah some human beings say PS3 has extra valuable pictures yet pictures do not make a sport gameplay does and Xbox 360 does a super activity on the two. so overall i might bypass Xbox 360 (and that i did)
