I own a HP Pavilion pc that has a very noisy fan. It has 4gb of memory and runs on vista 64 bit.The noise gets worse when there are several applications open but can occur with just browsing the internet. I use Chrome as my browser but doesn't make any difference if i use IE. Any ideas How I can stop it ?

If it's running noisily then it can only be one of two reasons.

One is the bearings are shot so replace it.

The second is fans get gunge build up on them which in turn

makes them run unbalanced.

It also disrupts the airflow over them thus lowering their efficiency

which makes them work harder.

I stripped out all my fans about 2 months ago, CPU, 2 chassis fans

and the PSU because they were getting noisy and gave them all a

good cleaning. In some cases the gunge had built up to an ⅛" thick

on the fan blades!

Now I can hardly hear the fans running in the background unless I

specifically listen for them!

It may not be that the machine is overheating or has anything wrong with it, it is often just the fan itself which is noisy.

Try cleaning it to start with, if you're not sure how get someone who knows what he's doing to show you. Often it's just an accumulation of fluff and dirt on the fan blades which causes this. PC fans are very good at accumulating this sort of rubbish. If it's still noisy, it's simple enough to get a replacement and fit it.

We've just had a server whose fan suddenly began to scream like a siren. Turned out half of one of the blades had broken off, we don't know why but I have my suspicions . . .

We had a laptop that did that. If you have a hose attachment on your hoover and you can see the fans try giving them a clean through the grid. I was amazed at the amount of dust that had got in there. Might be better to use a lower setting on the hoover to begin with.

it has nothing to do with cleaining the fan a noisy fan sounds like its going fast in a way i get it when im virus checking or using my ram it is your computer over heating if you hate the noise switch to liquid cooling system it will solve the issue or go for a master cooler thats my advice

The best way is to replace it, the fan blades might be hitting the outer shroud or internal problems within the fan

sounds like you need to blow out the dust inside your computer or replace the fan.
