I am running autocad electrical which only requires 512 mb of ram and a p4 processor, i am currently running on 2 gigs of ram and a dual core 2 duo prcessor but i am still experiencing slow performance and times at which the program will still fail to respond, i have done all of the troubleshooting that i can think of and i am still not coming up with a liable reason that it would do this, any recomendations or possible reasons would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like it could be one of two things: 1) faulty hardware or 2) you have a bunch of malware on your machine.

If its the hardware, it could be pretty much anything. The most likely culprits are usually bad memory or hard drive. To check for bad memory, you can run a memory check program. For the hard drive, you usually start hearing noises, but other stuff on it could fail.

If its malware, you could try running adaware or something like it, and run and antivirus. I'd say if you have a spare hard drive, try just installing an OS and autocad on it, and see if you have any issues.

It is not necessarily the amount of pagefile space used but the frequency of changing. You might watch Task Manager, Processes and view Memory Usage. With heavy and changing demands, you can see the usage going up and down (and the disk light flashing) as the application tries to collect the data to run. Alternatively, you might run PerfMon and set up logging to see what is happening.

If the application is dealing with large amounts of data, other Windows limitations dictate that it is better to use separate writes and reads to disk, rather than relying on paging (as with Photoshop). You can monitor Physical Disk I/O Writes and Reads and I/O Write and Read Bytes. You can compare results between acceptable and poor performance periods. Solution would be faster disks.

If you are suffering from excessive paging and using Vista, you might obtain significant improvement by using a Flash Drive and ReadyBoost.

These tests were via 64-Bit Vista.

You have enough memory and so forth but how many programs are open when you are trying to run AUTOCAD. Make sure all your internet options are deleted and on the bottom right you don't have icons open, everything down there is pulling from your system. you can goto Run-type MSCONFIG-then go to startup and see how much is running and deselect most of the items. That should help you if you haven't done it already.

My first guess would be an underpowered video card. Second, your hard disc is almost full or badly fragmented. Third, increase the size of your virtual memory (although with 2 GB of RAM you probably are OK). Your computer should be able to handle this program easily.

Edit: If it is happening on more than one machine its not your computer. Do you guys use a server or other network device in conjunction with the program?

It may have been designed for an earlier version of windows. Try to run it in compatibility mode. Right-click on the .exe and click the compatibility tab to set the windows version.

If this doesn't fix it, either the program has a serious memory leak, or most-likely, your computer is self-digesting its usefulness with malware

I would check your virtual memory and see if you page file usage is too high.

Have you seen the cad program on other computers? Is it as slow as on yours?

Does your computer seem to be overheating ever?

First it could be a viruse. just run a viruse scan and try and get it out.

second, whats your cpu running at. hit control alt delete, look at the bottom of task manager. it'll say what prosentage of your cpu is being used. if its high all the time you may have a lot of usless programs run in you start up. go to run, type in MSCONFIG. hit start up and then change your start up settings.
